Artist Supplies and Dan's Art Work

Can't remember ever seeing this discussed?? Just curious if there is an art supply store or store that carries art supplies on the island. I have been taking classes and was thinking of dabbling a bit on our next trip. Since I travel carry on only was considering what I might buy locally. Don't recall ever seeing art supplies but I know there are artists so there must be somewhere to get supplies. Also, is the cost so high it would be worth it to find room in the carryon for at least the paints? I would still need to buy gamsol or turpentine to oil paint.

Also, has anyone ever oil painted there or in a similar humid climate? I am thinking the canvases take longer to dry. Might make acrylics more practical for this trip.

TP, please forgive the title edit, but I think folks will also appreciate Dan's art work as well as the answer to your query.

No Problem! I love it! --Ti

My husband is an artist. He usually just draws sketches on the island. There is a shop that sells some artists supplies near the harbor in Gustavia on the far (Town Hall) side. I now he has purchased some items there like watercolors and colored pencils.

Yea... sketching is for sure more practical. I have done that before. Just loving the idea of oil painting by the sea.

I usually bring my watercolors, so easy to pack, dries quickly while working, and never a problem with TSA. Maybe consider while on the island, doing sketches, notes on colors with the watercolors, and taking photos, then once home paint the "masterpiece". I do that often even with my watercolors. Haven't produced that "masterpiece" yet but have ended up with some travel journals/sketches that remind me of a very special place or event.

Jim is correct. The best place to purchase art supplies is the Librairie Barnes on the far side of the harbor near the former Wall House. They do have oil paints, canvases and other supplies.

Would you artists be willing to post some of your St Barth work for us to enjoy?

I posted these a couple of years ago...pastels that my husband Dan did while on the island. I'm not sure if I have jpegs of any of his other works.

Jim, those are really lovely!!!! Thanks for sharing. I also would love to see more sketches/paintings. Very nice:)

Oh, Jim....tell Dan I think they are just delightful! What a talent he has!

Thank you very much for sharing them with us.

Oh I'm sure Dan is willing to see them go to people who appreciate them. Last year he sold an acrylic to a friend in Florida and we packed it up securely and sent it off...no problem. If anyone is interested in the pastels please message me.

Here are several of Dan's watercolors done on the island, also one more pastel. Dan is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as a teaching professor of art history. He has had gallery exhibits in Philadelphia and New York and sells his work regularly. The prices are...$50 for the pastels and $75 for the watercolors unframed. Prices include shipping and handling to the US. Framing we can do but it will add significantly to the prices as you can imagine.

Dan has done many paintings of Fire Island scenes, Fred. He works in acrylics on the northern island. Here are three examples of his work based on Fire Island themes.
