leaving ny in February in shorts and shorts sleeves would be interesting thats for sure. thanks all, i will prob wear a pair of pants down and back. just pack shorts and shirts in the carry on.

Get a pair of cargo pants that zip off at the knee. that's why they were invented...!

georgedp wears those -

Mike,

Whatever works and is comfortable. ;)

As for "zip-off long/short pants," geeky? I find them useful. Sounds like you're "profiling." ;)

Asking for directions is commonsense. Taking a random turn is very cool, with caution being a primary focus. So far, so good.

hmmmmm...must be a "guys named George who are musicians" thing....that I clearly dont get....LOL

Mike get with the program. You have to use a GPS now. It will tell you everything. Hold it in front of you as you walk down the street.

Actually got behind someone using one this year and SBH. They eventually got tired of me riding their bumper and tooting the horn and let me pass. Those GPS in cars on SBH will cause some serious problems as these people spent more time straring at it than the road.

too funny!!

but the ones I love the best, and I see it almost every day, are the ones with the pad and pen checklists for their agendas

Yep. When we are on our times away, we go with the flow.

GPS and notes serve a purpose. Often overused and misused by many - ya miss many great moments (and special sights, food, new friends, etc.)

IMHO, "overstudying" and missing the moments defeats the purpose of traveling, exploring and enjoying. To each their own. That's the way it should be. Safely enjoy the wonders around you without being told "this is the way you must do it." Commonsense and a real understanding of what you want and what your capabilities are is a good starting point.

I bring 1 pair of long pants. They're generally for the plane ride down and the plane ride back. The only two places that are known to require long pants are Bartolomeo at Le Guanahani, and Le Yacht Club. I have zero interest in visiting either of them.

Sorry to dredge this year-and-a-half-old story up on you, ol' boy, but what's your histoire with Le Bartoloméo? Looking at recent prix-fixe menus, and judging by my recent experience (very good) at l'Indigo, Le Bartoloméo would seem worth a try...

I have no recent history with Bartolomeo. The menu does look interesting, but I already have a list of interesting menus that I never seem to get to. Too many restaurants, too little time.

I got through three or four posts before I realized that this was originally started a year and a half ago! Fun to re-read old stuff here.

I can appreciate that, you two, but it's too bad that everyone else's curiosity to discover something new is equally sated. I.e., there's not a single Le Bartoloméo review that the search feature fetches. Only four or five hits total, and all of those concerning their long pants requirement.

Personally, I have plenty of solid, compelling lunch options on my list, but I'm having trouble finding dinner destinations I'm thrilled with.

À suivre...

I'm always interested in discovering something new. I make it a point to try one or two new places on each trip. But Bartolomeo isn't likely to make it to the top of my list anytime soon.

Yes, precisely, that's what I was asking in the first place...why not? I have no horse in the race, I'm just interested in vetting new options.
Par avance, merci.

Don't know if my opinion has any validity, so I will give you Davesdad's recent comment. We always stay at the Guanahani and there is usually one dinner included at the Barto. This year is different as they offer a dinner served in your room in our rate. Davesdad said that no way was he eating in the room for dinner; he would rather go elsewhere, even if the dinner is included..I might ask to see if it would be possible to dine in the restaurant, but DD is not a long pants kind of guy. I think the food in the past has been good, but if I were not staying at the Guanahani and if dinner were not included, I think I would choose many other restaurants first, with a limited amount of time. If we do dine there, I will be happy to send you info. We have taken cooking lessons with the chef each time we have come, and he is a really great guy. I agree, the menu looks good! As "gourmet/gourmand?!" as DD is, he'd probably opt for somewhere on the water, or Andy's..! P.S. DD is an awesome chef himself...

We visited the place once, about four years ago.

My recollection -- the foie gras on the menu at the time (with a passion fruit chutney) was literally one of the best dishes I've had in my entire life.

Realize that I've been known to make dinner reservations before making flight reservations. I take food way too seriously.

I don't remember much about the rest of the meal and I don't know if they have the same chef, but that was one incredible course.

So yeah, I'd give it a try.

According to some posts not too long ago, you can go to lunch or dinner anywhere in shorts and a polo shirt except one place mentioned by Amy. That's not my style but some who live on the island go that way.

I do live on the island, and neither my wife or I can imagine a dinner in a restaurant in short pants, not even in NYC !
