Excellent remarks. (I remain an unpublished avid reader).Today we celebrate freedom.
The author is free to write, you are free to read, and we are all free to form opinions.
The amount of research that went into the book is admirable in and of itself.
While writing styles are personal, and some might find disagreement or different recollections, I found the book fascinating and learned a great deal I did not know.

. . . what many consider the demise on the island . . .
I’m still reading, slowly. From the YouTube video, can we now blame what many consider the demise on the island on Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow? Or should we stick with St Tropez?

A visible-in-hindsight turning point, not the cause! And I’d call St.-Tropez a warning, not the cause either. Remember that the first Tropezian invasion was turned back.I’m still reading, slowly. It’s a quandary! In terms of “demise” or other disaffection with the island, I think that perspective must be examined. Is viewpoint principally about dining . . . maybe beaches . . . shopping . . . serenity . . . tradition . . . villas . . . hotels . . . nightclubs . . . sargassum . . . or something else? A combination? In my nearly 50 years of frequency on the island, I’ve seen a lot. LOL! I don’t think, as I’ve been a longtime explorer, that there is much that I’ve missed. In this regard, I say that there’s much that I dislike in changes, but “the old St. Barths” is still there — local people, friendships, traditions, neighborhood celebrations, history, fine dining, comfort in accommodations, warmth in morning/afternoon/evening greetings. St. Barths is a gem. There are other happy places in the world, of course, but right now I find that refinement, tranquility, gracious & fine dining, beauty, security, & a welcoming spirit offer a winning combination!I’m still reading, slowly. Valid, Michael. We’ll have to meet for a longer conversation about turning point & cause. Has a “no-going-back” line been crossed?A visible-in-hindsight turning point, not the cause! And I’d call St.-Tropez a warning, not the cause either. Remember that the first Tropezian invasion was turned back.
My argument is that SBH is at a tipping point but--as going back isn't possible--those who want balance have the edge because the "pushers" are in it for profit and that POV is shortsighted. So glad I'm returning in October, Ellen!Valid, Michael. We’ll have to meet for a longer conversation about turning point & cause. Has a “no-going-back” line been crossed?

Almost always a safe betI agree with Dennis
As Rick comforted Ilsa in Casablanca, "We'll always have the real St. Barths!"I agree with Dennis that there is a whole world of "old" St Barth . . the locals get their island back for a few months, and can breathe bit... until the next season of insanity starts ramping up in November.
Perfect line to paraphrase, Dennis! As Rick comforted Ilsa in Casablanca, "We'll always have the real St. Barths!"
