Beach chairs at ER?

Maybe it’s the NY’er in me but I always leave a generous tip… in cash. I want the staff to remember me, in a good way, so I can get a good table when I want one. Slipping a maitre d’ a C note on a consistent basis does wonders when trying to get into a popular place on a busy night. When they solicit a tip it’s the perfect opportunity to cultivate a good relationship with the people who can make or break a nice dining experience.
I would have to really want to be somewhere to slip anyone a c note. as far as tipping goes, I always tip. 10 to 15 percent is the norm for me. the help most likely needs it, regardless of service included. why else would they stay in a house with 10 other people? yikes.

Got it!! Yeah, you have to ask!

I was wondering if it meant that big sushi boats or things like that which are outrageously priced and a lot of wasted food.

(Once at La Guerite, a friend and I were ordering the fish that was on the menu...probably mahi mahi or whatever. The server talked us into ordering the same fish that was a special, prepared differently. Foolishly didn't ask the price. The next day or two later, I happened to check my credit card - the charge was so outrageous I thought they accidentally didn't split the bill across the two cards. Yep, I was suckered. I have never been there since and won't go to the beach club.)

Reminds me of a similar experience at GypSea when they first opened on the beach. We went for lunch and ordered a whole grilled fish for two. The server did not present a board, rather a very large platter of whole fish to choose from. We didn’t realize our choice had been flown in from France—server conveniently didn’t differentiate. It was beautifully cooked so when we got the bill for the 185 euro fish we laughed and said lesson learned ; )

We did something similar years ago at Le Ti. The waiter asked if we'd like to add some foie gras on top of our steak for a supplemental charge. We were feeling festive and thought, sure, why not?? I'm to embarrassed to tell you what that supplemental charge was. It was probably more than the steak.

Lesson learned!

I'm old enough to remember when the suggestion to newbies was to check the specials boards at certian restaurants for value deals!

Yes, and then came the beach clubs and their sucker boards. I would still have a look at the board at Le Repaire, Arawak Café, and if I ever get there, Licorne - places with a large local clientele.

Learned the same lesson adding fresh truffle to a pasta dish at L'Isola. They shaved it on table side and you had to tell them when to stop. It added up quick. LOL.

Lots of funny "live and learn" lessons here! I think it is really nice of you all to warn people about the "manhole" they are about to step into when they do not ask about the supplemental charges..there are a lot of permutations of that and I always like when people can be educated. A good reason to be on this Forum!! ❤️ Thank you for sharing, Forum members!🙏
