La Casina, mini-review

As noted in another post, dinner last night — my first of returning to SBH — was at La Casina.

Owner-partners, Mimi & Greg (also proprietors of Le Piment) & Host Mathis very warmly greeted me, inviting me to sit at the bar for a drink with them before moving to a table when my “family” friends arrived. For a Monday night, it was surprisingly crowded . . . nearly every seat taken. Everyone “local,” it seemed . . . as all greeted each other as though it were a reunion of close friends who hadn’t seen each other in a long time (as the extended “season” winds-down, that may be the case!)

It also was a very special evening . . . sharing stories of summer holidays & celebrating the acceptance of young Achille into medical school in France (coming in at #2 out of 360 students competing in the first year at University).

Everyone was very hungry, so I regret to note that I missed photographing starter courses (I had a sublime plate of Carpaccio di Polpo (octopus) in a light, lemon-y vinaigrette) &, unfortunately, the out-of-this-world Chocolate Moelleux cake (perhaps any chocolate lover would enjoy simply going to La Casina for this mouth-wateringly good cake . . . with, of course, a glass of champagne!).

I did, however, capture other great evening dining moments
. . . a delicious Veal Piccata (with GF pasta)

. . . with excellent wine

La Casina has hit its stride . . . food preparation is refined, service great, & — I was assured by one of my young guests — “awesome” pizza! Enjoy an evening (or more) when you’re next on St. Barths.

Love it when Dennis is on the island not only for his dining reports & pix, but updates on everything! The wine that you had at La Casina now on my search list. Not familiar with the brand, but just learned alot reading online & checking merchants. Doubt any here in the lowcountry of SC would have. Hope it was exceptionally tasty ?

Exceptional, Nancy. A local (primarily Italian) wine dealer recommended it. I also was sucked-in my the label! Trés elegant!

My Tuscan wine tour of 2 yrs ago in October for almost 2 weeks with just 12 of us adventurers plus the 2 wine guys/pros...didn't include Ricasoli. The brand has been associated with wine for hundreds of years...check out their website, restaurant, agriturismos. Yes, quite a label...will be looking for it ! and the 2021. I recently got 2 boxes of other Italian wines recommended by my wine guru friend who runs the tours. Salute' !

I agree, my reaction was that they served me a different dish. We did not have a good experience, glad to hear that things are improving.
Glad to read this nice review--We felt the same when we dined in January-looking forward to giving it another shot Jan of 2026!!

. . . responding to several comments to the effect that food of fairly recent La Casina visits was disappointing, I’d like to clarify that it’s important to go to La Casina with the state of mind that it offers, IMO, high quality “comfort food” — meals that are flavorful & perhaps reminiscent of happy times with friends & families — in a “feel good” setting. The food, for me, is quite delicious . . . but the expectation should not be “gastronomique,” such as might be found at L’Isola and Mamo. The prices also reflect simple, traditional, regional Italian flavors & preparation. Service is, likewise, warm & friendly in ways that are found in Italian village dining.

Dennis, you would make a good Alabamian . Comfort food down here is roasted pork, turnip greens and sweet potatoes, corn bread and iced tea. Nothing fancy, just good food.
