Eating my way around the island

First night in, I decided to stop at JoJo Burger for dinner. On Monday before I left NYC I went to Au Cheval for lunch. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s all the rage in NYC as having one of the best burgers in the city. Well this one from JoJo was pretty near perfect. The seasoning was just right. Cooked beautifully pink. And the frites. OMG the frites. I don’t know if they have a new cook in the kitchen but they maybe the best I’ve ever had on the island. Crisp but fluffy in the middle. I wanted to eat them all but I controlled myself and left two or three.

Au Cheval started in Chicago with the Brendan Sodikoff group, and it is a very good burger. He has since expanded into NYC with a few different restaurants, including one of my favorite old haunts, The Monkey Bar. Jojo Burger is awesome, was just there a few days ago.

their signature burger was "sickeningly rich"
I went with a bunch of buddies a few weeks back. We ordered a ton of stuff from the menu and split three burgers. Had the add on of extra thick bacon and fried eggs. Frankly you couldn’t taste the beef as there was so much going on. Could have been tofu. When I went on my own on Monday I just had the basic burger. It was really good. I still think the best two burgers in NY are at Red Hook Tavern and the bar at Manhatta. Two very different experiences but two exceptional burgers. In the background of the photo behind the fries is a steak sandwich. That may actually be the sleeper winner at Au Cheval.

The last toes in the sand casual beachfront spot that doesn’t charge a premium for the location I think left is Ti Corail. Camille set me up at the bar facing the tiny kitchen so I could watch all the action. Yan is in the south of France so there were two young female chefs running things. I asked one of them how they do so much in such a small space. She said organization. As if was as simple as that.

Aubergine caviar to start, tataki of wagyu with a mango and ginger sauce and the piece de resistance a slice of lime cheesecake with a compote of pineapple and passion fruit. Je suis si heureux. The one downside I see to traveling and eating on your own is that I don’t get to sample as many different things. When you have a partner you can order twice as much and share. I could do that but I would explode.

One of our favorite lunch places. Thanks for posting for tonight we are dining on pizza.

Wish I was there, we could eat together. I love St. Barth....
Unfortunately, I do not see retirement anytime in my future so 8-days at a time will do just fine.

I pioneered the “bar” seating as I many times walked, solo, from CEC to Ti Corail without a reservation. Being a frequent luncheon arrival, Yann rallied to support me by bringing a stool to the counter for us to talk while I enjoyed lunch. After a time, it became a new, regular source of expanded dining for the restaurant. Now days, I have to compete for space (though, admittedly, Camille & others make sure that I don’t go hungry!).

While I have been eating my way around, not much was worth posting about (other than my dinner with Ellen and Rosie - thanks again!) until I went back to Ti Corail for a late lunch today.

I sat myself gingerly onto the stool at the bar facing the bay this time. Gingerly because I am aching from my surf day. Who knew that your chin and chest get banged up in addition to the sore shoulders from all that paddling?

Mahi Mahi salad to start. Tartness times two from a passion fruit vinaigrette and pomegranate kernels. The astute observer may note that I have removed my baseball cap and placed it on the counter to the upper left. Don’t want to offend anyone. 😎

Then mahi mahi part two, seared with crispy fried rice.

One happy camper. Had probably one more than I should have and went back to the villa for a well earned nap.
