Anguilla

SBH Insider
After 20 years of visiting St. Barts we are thinking of going to Anguilla. Surely there are members of this forum that have gone and stayed in Anguilla. Finding a villa is the first priority. Any advice would be appreciated.

We own a condo on Anguilla, and have been going there for 20 years. You can PM me if you have any questions - it's a great spot!

I’ve been going to Anguilla frequently since 1993. This year 2+ weeks in SBH then on to Anguilla. Wonderful people, spectacular beaches & great restaurants. Totally different vibe than SBH. More laid back and no late night party spots with dancing on the tables. Recommend staying in the west end. Rendezvous bay beach is probably the most beautiful Caribbean beach!

And a visit to the white powder sand beach, Shoal Bay. That beach with its clear water took my breath away

Anguilla is great but very different than SBH. I lived there on and off for 10 years and owned a scuba diving business there. I'm with Amy and vote for Shoal Bay. It's where all us Ex-Pats would meet up and hang out but you really can't go wrong with any of the beaches. A really special little beach where you would be all alone is Captains Bay but it's a bit of an adventure to get there. There's a wall on the right side with lots of fish but stay away from the left side as there is a bit of an undertow. There's one really spectacular villa on it and it's rumored to be the place where the Friends cast go to get away from it all. It's easy to say the beaches are the best thing about the Island but for me it is the people. They are kind and gentle but just be on Island time and take things slowly. The saying on Anguilla is "Life's a Beach...and then you Dine" and that about sums it up. A good place to find a villa is on Tripadvisor. Click on Vacation Rentals on the tool bar at the top of the page and browse away!

Loved our time in Anguilla. Cap Juluca was out of this world. Yes different from St. Barth. I prefer St. Barth. There is a vibe in St. Barth that is unequalled anywhere else we have traveled. I do like the golf course in Anguilla though.

Why go to Anguilla when you have St Barth... No.
Because it's a different vibe from here that also has good food, beautiful beaches and welcoming people... and sometimes it's nice to explore new places? St Barths will always be my #1, but I have room in my heart for both.

The prettiest beach I ever saw was Shoal Bay East. Scilly Cay has many memories for me too.
I was one of the original owners of Shoal Bay Scuba and Watersports back in the '90s. The secret to the incredibly white soft sand is how it was made over countless years. Parrot Fish eat coral for a living. There's not much nutrition in a mouthful of coral that they chew off the coral head so they are constantly chewing and excreting what's left. The sand is not rock at all but small particles of pure coral. That's why it's as soft as cotton and as white as snow. When it is next to and underneath a shallow stretch of water the sun is refracted back into an alphabet of blues. The first time you drive over the hill leading down to Shoal Bay Beach it takes your breath away. It was a great Office!

Beachcomber, thank you for this ecological explanation. Indeed, that view took my breath away. Then Uncle Ernie's punch took me to la la land on a comfortable Pressure King rented lounge! Ahh, Anguilla. Good memories.

Amazing memories. My best friend on Anguilla had his own plane and we darn near flew the wings off that little Cessna 182rg. If an Island had a runway, we landed there but the time on St Barts was always the most special. I remember when he got certified to land there how excited he was.

. . . the thrill of that certification is legendary! A memory carried & told for a lifetime.

We used to love Anguilla when the Sonesta Hotel was there on Rendezvous Bay, next to the hotel where the sutured socialites would heal after their surgeries. Junior would meet us at the airport with the “family” car, we would hang with Pressure King and party at Uncle Ernie’s. Uncle Ernie would sit at his hightop & be the ONLY person to count his money. The Dune & Bankie Banx, Scilly Cay, and Mango’s were our favorite places. When both Pressure King & Dave from Mango’s were killed, we decided maybe Anguilla was not for us anymore! Great memories though!!
