Telephone and Internet Outage

The Collectivité reports that due to an incident in the construction area on the stretch of road between La Tourmente and l’Oeuf (the road above the airport going towards Anse des Cayes) there is a telephone and internet outage which has cut service to Colombier, Flamamds, Terre Neuve, Merlette, and Anse des Cayes.

Mobile phone service is out in those areas, and is expected to be restored in 5 days. ADSL (copper) internet service is out in all of those areas except Colombier, and is expected to be restored in 5-15 days.

Fiber Connections are not impacted.

It’s unclear to me if the ADSL (Copper) outage also impacts landline telephones, but to me, copper is copper.

The Collectivité has activated a number of emergency SAFE Wi-Fi hotspots, a service that was implemented after Hurricane Irma. (Apple users should disable iCloud Private Relay). Note that the hotspot in front of the school in Colombier is out of service,

The Collectivités decision to implement an Emergency-only fiber-connected SAFE Wi-Fi network is a great idea. Immediately after Irma there was no such thing. The community support of establishments such as the Hotel Guanahani, who opened their fiber-connected network to the island residents, made emergency access possible while the island was recovering.

One other thought - it’s likely that businesses in the impacted areas who do not have fiber internet access will be unable to accept credit cards. The one that I know of is La Vie Claire, the organic grocer above Anse des Cayes.

don't know never been there but it's the only restaurant on that hill in Merlette on the way to Flamands - has had a lot of names like Spice and Food Locker etc...

On the way down to Cheval Blanc it is on the left hillside .One year it had a large white painted wooden wagon wheel as a land marker outside the restaurant if I remember correctly
