Holiday Treats At Carambole: A Treasure In Gustavia

One of the fun things about visiting the Caribbean in early January is the extended holiday season observed in these parts. Three King's Day, January 6, is like a late bookend to the holiday season. Holiday decorations are still up, and culinary traditions like Three King's Cake are available. In addition to a wide selection of pastries, sandwiches and other scrumptious foods, Carambole bakery in Gustavia still has a case full of Buche de Noel yule logs in three different flavors: chocolate, strawberry and currant! We bought the last strawberry cake yesterday but there are still plenty of the others left. They are so delicious!

Agree with Jim, I just love the holiday cakes..a January advantage for sure. So last January, I was lucky enough to snag a Galette des Rois at the end of January with the frangipane in it. I took it back to Le G and indulged in a piece and left the rest in its box on the coffee table.
I came back later after housecleaning and noticed that the cake was gone…with a note that the ants had also enjoyed my galette....so note to self..don’t leave your cake out in the tropics. Epilogue: the chef at Le Guanahani that night made me an entire new Galette des Rois..unbeknownst to me, housekeeping must have informed him and I was bowled over by their efforts and kindness.. ( One of the many reasons we have loved them for 20 +years and will really miss being there this year!). Actually, the more I think about it, the more I will miss my weeks on island..I’m really trying to be flexible in our “old age”! Maybe the chef on SeaDream would be open to a little Galette suggestion... Maybe there will be some “leftovers” at Super U in SXM.... guess the real bakeries are long done with the goodies Jim found.

Carambole never disappoints. Those bûches lingering into January are one of the island’s little bonuses.
