EU to propose Covid-19 vaccine passports in March

"The European Commission will present a proposal in March on creating an EU-wide digital vaccination passport, an issue that has divided member states, Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday (March 1)."

Slippery slope. An abomination.

Why is that? I started carrying a CDC Yellow card in 1968. Vaccinations were required to enter certain countries. I had to refresh my yellow fever inoculation a few years ago for a Africa trip. How is this any different?

well, just for starters, yellow fever mortality rate for those who become seriously ill with the disease is 20-60%.

Brought my trusty yellow vaccine card with me to have them enter the vaccine into the booklet, along with the white vaccine card.

In regards to the comparison made between Yellow Fever and COVID-19, with the observation that Yellow Fever has a mortality rate of 20% to 60% for those who develop serious illness, it would be worth noting that the mortality rate from those who develop severe COVID-19 symptoms is right on par with that, and often worse by age group.

Likewise, when a dengue vaccine is finally available, I can only hope that the Caribbean and other susceptible destinations will require proof of dengue vaccination for arriving visitors.

Great idea Deb! I just got out our vaccination record cards. I'll take them with us when we get vaccinated!

I guess these types of cards/apps may become the norm for travel and events. I had no idea NY was doing this. I suspect travel, as discussed in the OP, will become part of it in the US and globally at some point also:

ALBANY — Sports fans in New York can now use a state-issued “pass” to prove they’re COVID-free before the next big game at Madison Square Garden or Barclays Center.

The “Excelsior Pass,” which began with a pilot program launched Feb. 27 for a Brooklyn Nets game at Barclays Center, will utilize a mobile QR code that confirms a negative coronavirus test or that someone has been fully vaccinated. The pass developed in partnership with IBM and functions similar to a mobile boarding pass for air travel, will next be tested Tuesday for a New York Rangers game at MSG.
Gov. Cuomo said the program will play a critical role in getting information to venues and sites in a secure and streamlined way, “allowing us to fast-track the reopening of these businesses and getting us one step closer to reaching a new normal.”

“We’re doing everything we can to vaccinate as many New Yorkers as possible, as quickly as possible, while keeping the infection rate down and reenergizing our economy in a safe, smart way,” the governor said in a statement. “As we begin reopening the valves on different sectors of our economy, we are putting guidelines in place to ensure individuals attending events involving larger gatherings have tested negative for COVID or have been vaccinated to avoid an outbreak of the virus.”

There is a dengue vaccine available. It has issues for people who have not been previously infected with one of the four (some say five) dengue serotypes.

Hopefully, we’ll see a vaccine that works on those who haven’t had dengue at all. The current offering seems to serve a fairly narrow market.

Side note — what an odd side effect for a vaccine to actually cause a higher risk of severe illness for the very thing it is intended to protect against if you haven’t had said illness before. Not sure I’ve come across that before!

You might find this readable discussion of antibody dependent enhancement interesting although otherwise best left as a topic on an immunology insiders forum...

Finally had a chance to read over this tonight. Thanks for sharing! Fascinating stuff -- sounds like there's not any identified risk of this occurring with the COVID vaccines in the market, so that is great news.

The CDC’s new recommendations seem directionally supportive of a health passport.

The CDC's new recommendations are very exciting. Liz and I each received the Janssen vaccine on Sunday and are looking forward to life with fewer restrictions.
