Anyone ever work with rentmania?

they are asking for passport photos to finish booking. I suspect a scam. Noone has ever asked for that since we started visiting the island in 2009.

I have pushed back on their request. I will probably ask if they will give me my deposit back.
curious to how they got a deposit from you without a rental contract? never heard of them on the island. the only thing car rental agencies ask for on st. barths is your driver's license and credit card.

This was though Vrbo and when I requested the dates they confirmed and later sent me a link for the deposit. I have used vrbo several times over the years with no issues.

Be very careful - there are a lot of scam VRBO listings and I have heard of a few cases of guests showing up on island thinking they have a reservation when they do not. VRBO listings are no longer just "vacations rentals by owner" and they allow third party listings and are pretty lax about confirming if they are legit or not. If you have the name of the villa, it would probably be a good idea to find the owner's website if you can and confirm the listing.

Excellent advice, Tiffany

although its most likely too late now as You have sent a deposit. but in the future, use airbnb, all deposits go through airbnb. owners do not get anything until you check in.

if there is a problem, either the host remedies it immediately or airbnb will handle it. I stayed in an airbnb in sint maartin and it was not like the pics. I let the owner know immediately and their response was "we were in a rush today to get the villa ready for you", sorry things were not up to the pics. I told them I will stay but requested a 200 dollar refund which I thought was fair. it was a 4 day stay. the owner refused and said she would give me a discount the next trip. I told her there would be no next trip.

since it was too late by the time I arrived to change. I let airbnb know the situation with pics. airbnb sided with me and gave me the $200 refund. I normally always give a 5 star rating as this was the only time in 11 years of using airbnb that I was disappointed and the owners before had always been helpful if I had a problem, after checking out of the sxm rental, I did the review and gave a one star as I felt I had to waste my time to get the refund requested, I would even have accepted a lower amount from the owner but she stood firm and said she never gives refunds.

Thanks for all your feed back. I have gone ahead and filed for a refund of my deposit through BOA. I think I have a pretty good chance of getting it back since VRBO customer service has indicated that they do not allow hosts to post payment links that travel outside of VRBO. In effect rentmania was attempting to bypass VRBO's rules. VRBO said if the credit card issuer does not refund me that they will.
