Wine & Charcuterie

Papillon Ivre menu...Oeuf en Meurette caught my eye...had a different version in the late 90's on a rainy day while in Dijon before going on a barge trip in Burgundy. My 1st husband swore by something similar for a cold...beef bouillon, float a piece of toast with poached egg on top...a few sprinkles of grated cheese...my go to when I have a cold...just no wine in the soup.

Exactly. It’s your money, spend it how ever makes you happy. I’ve been happy with a Cheeseburger Pommes Frite ans a ice-cold tiny-Heinie at Le Select. I’ve been happy with a Cheeseburger Pommes Frites and a bottle of Cotton Charlemagne Grand Cru at Santa Fé. Some wouldn’t consider my first choice, while others would be horrified at the other. My money. Both made me happy.

Small plates, I go there from time to time, but I’m not really a fan. But, when the mood strikes…
Gotta laugh: my first white Burgundy was a Corton-Charlemagne 1980 back in my early "gourmet" days..it was incomparable (a gift from a friend), so I did not really drink white wine afterwards (and still mostly go with a Champagne if it is to be "white wine") because I got so spoiled and it was pretty expensive back then!! What a nice memory, especially from Santa Fe..would have liked that one with "moules" for sure. I'm pretty much a "red only" girl now..so much wine, so little time 😅

You gave it a go and now you know for the next time, Risa
100% Amy, I've been to St B in all kinds of circumstances, with 1 or 2 friends, w a husband, with a smaller group, with a slightly larger group, alone. There's something to be said for all experiences, but for now, I long to go back alone or to visit a friend on the island.

Hi Risa,
I have always been taught and practice myself; if you are treating, do not complain about the situation or cost. One puts themselves there when extending the invitation. I have not any regrets regarding St. Barth, we all know it is costly but very much worth it or we would not keep revisiting. Wonderful memories are created on St. Barth; money comes and goes but the memories are everlasting :)
Thanks, I wasn't treating, it was all group dinners, and we were splitting the bill. But over 5 days, I couldn't help but notice that my "share" was subsidizing much bigger drinkers and appetites* it gets tiresome, especially the alcohol (until the last night when I finally said to myself "f*ck it, just order what you want instead of being concerned about spending too much, no one else seems to care!"). It's ok. I just would be more cautious about doing it again. As I said "that's on me."

*For example, there was one guy who just didn't want to miss anything. I don't eat meat or chicken, just fish/vegetables. The night at Le Pap, the person who did the ordering for the group made sure to order one specific item for me, as I wasn't partaking of foie gras, duck, and so many other items. When that item got passed to me, this guy couldn't help but take half of it first. And so on. I wouldn't choose to travel with him again, for that and other annoying reasons. Live and learn. I never thought I would enjoy solo travel, but as I get older, I have learned that I prefer it. Perhaps if I met the right person....
