what are you eating??

Traditional Newfoundland music. They didn't have mercury lights back then...

Squid Jiggin' Ground Copyright 1944, A. R. Scammell

Oh... this is the place where the fishermen gather
With oil-skins and boots and Cape Anns battened down
All sizes of figures with squid lines and jiggers
They congregate here on the squid-jiggin' ground.

Some are workin' their jiggers while others are yarnin'
There's some standin' up and there's more lyin' down
While all kinds of fun, jokes and tricks are begun
As they wait for the squid on the squid-jiggin' ground.

There's men of all ages and boys in the bargain
There's old Billy Cave and there's young Raymond Brown
There's a red rantin' Tory out here in the dory
A-runnin' down Squires on the squid-jiggin' ground.

There's men from the Harbour and men from the Tickle
In all kinds of motorboats... green, grey and brown
Right yonder is Bobby and with him is Nobby
He's chewin' hard tack on the squid-jiggin' ground.

God bless my sou'wester, there's Skipper John Chaffey
He's the best hand at squid-jiggin' here, I'll be bound
Hello! What's the row? Why, he's jiggin' one now
The very first squid on the squid-jiggin' ground.

The man with the whiskers is old Jacob Steele
He's gettin' well up but he's still pretty sound
While Uncle Bob Hawkins wears six pairs of stockin's
Whenever he's out on the squid-jiggin' ground.

Holy smoke! What a scuffle! All hands are excited
'Tis a wonder to me that there's nobody drowned
There's a bustle, confusion, a wonderful hustle
They're all jiggin' squid on the squid-jiggin' ground.

Says Bobby, "The squids are on top of the water,
I just got me jigger 'bout one fathom down"
When a squid in the boat squirted right down his throat
And he's swearin' like mad on the squid-jiggin' ground.

There's poor Uncle Billie, his whiskers are spattered
With spots of the squid juice that's flyin' around;
One poor little b'y got it right in the eye
But they don't give a damn on the squid-jiggin' ground.

Now if ever you feel inclined to go squiddin'
Leave your white shirts and collars behind in the town
And if you get cranky without yer silk hanky
You'd better steer clear of the squid-jiggin' ground.

nice!

yeah its a big social thing now.....tons of people head down to the piers around midnight or a little after...townies....some tourists..everybody squid jiggin.....good times

me I'd rather pub crawl and get someone to leave me a bucket of squid on the boat that I can get the next morning.... ;)

Voosh, I didn't know that Hank Snow was Canadian. Being from NS, he obviously knew the song.

We need a post about Gooseberry Jam or Moose Meat or something to get this thread back on track...

... Yeah, there's good eats everywhere.

Our Canadian neighbors have been a fountain of talent that we forget and claim as "our own" in the USA. There's some sites that focus on that ignorance. Stay tuned...

I feel lucky that I get many Canadian radio and TV feeds, even in French, here.

Try some moose muffle recipies. The pick of the catch if ya know how to fix it up right.

My friends "up nort" know how to use and survive on every bit of a "catch."

I quit hunting and fishing some years ago. Plenty of great "real" at local shops and I don't spend a fortune on travel, ammo, etc. We take pics and enjoy whatever this year brings us - never shot an ear of corn or a tomato.

Big dilemma here now - can't mow parts of the yard because rabbits are nesting, burrowing and breeding. Had to haul the dawg from a burrow yesterday. Sure, they are vermin. But, nice and cute vermin. I did honk Kathy off when I brought in a recipie for Hasenpfeffer. "Too much f*ckin' work for too little to eat. I grew up in the south and had to clean tons of tiny birds that barely made a dinner for a family gathering." Dawg is on leash, for now, as we cruise the woods.

The fish and rhum supplies have been restocked after a weekend in Provincetown. Grilled Striped Bass for dinner, and Clement Rhum Vieux for a nightcap. Thanks, Mike.

I bought hot dogs for Memorial Day but never used them- too many chicken wings but I intend to have 2 on Saturday. I like raw onions with them and French mustard on a long Italian roll.

Sounds delicious, Andy. I was conflicted. After such a dry dog spell, we debated. Chili? Onions? Mustard, relish, Heinz ketchup? In the end I went with a plain grilled Hummel, a pure CT hot dog on a toasted roll. (pure and hot dog in the same sentence? Hmmm..)With a side of cottage cheese with chives, piccalilli, and corn relish. A nod to Rhode Island heritage.

Kate got turned on to a specific French mustard that Manu served with my Cassoulet at Santa Fe, Maille Fine de Dijon. We brought a jar home, which is all but empty. It's costing me bigtime to resupply her - I can't find it in the US, and am having it shipped in from France.

Hot dogs are sounding good, and maybe some Burgers and Italian Sausage too. It will rain tomorrow, but Thursday looks good. I think I'll whip together a quick cookout for 50...

I will double check but think I have found this in the International aisle at Stop and Shop in CT.

Rosemary,

If it is Maille Fine de Dijon, Product of France, rather than one of the other Maille mustards, then it will be worth my time to drive to CT. The gas that I burn will be less than the cost of shipping, and a nice weekend drive is always on my list of things to do... Thanks for checking!

I'm on it, Kevin! I will be there tomorrow. If its the correct mustard, we can meet at the border or in Newport for the transfer of goods. Stand by!
