The St. Barth Newsletters: Les Amis de St. Barth

JEK

Senior Insider
It occurred to me that we have many new Forum members who didn't see the excellent find that Charlie Biddle made a few years back -- a compendium of newsletters about St. Barth from the 60s and 70s. A big file, but downloadable at this link.

I've mentioned this before, but I was an avid subscriber to the only source for SBH that could be had at the time and was fortunate enough to meet Porter. I may still have some old issues filed away somewhere.

charlie,
Do you think you have ones in addition to the ones ChasBidd has provided us in the post above?

JEK - I'll try to remember to look through some old files and check this out. On the small world thing, I now have a friend in Raleigh who grew up on St Barts who I met in person many years ago thanks to Porter's newsletter.

Have you downloaded ChasBidd's compendium?

448 mb is one huge file to open or download, so I'll just relay 2 stories from Porter that have remained in my memory bank for a very long time.

One was a story about the new owners of Eden Rock living through hurricane Luis on their recent arrival - quite a story.

The other is about Porter spreading ashes of a departed friend into the waters of St Barts. That story brought big time tears.

Not so big these days. Took me 3 minutes on my connection. Just let it run and it will finish before you know it.

May God bless Porter Henry.

I met Porter in the late 80's or early 90's. We shared a few cocktails at the bar at the Marigot Bay Club. Nice guy. Invited us to stop by anytime. I still look at his driveway as I pass by, but I don't think that the "Henry" sign is there anymore.

The one time I met Porter was at a dinner in Cincinnati when I was there on business. I made a point of arranging it as I had enjoyed so much reading his newsletter and my only ongoing contact with SBH.

If memory serves me correctly, he told me he was the first American to own a house there.

Can't really remember when it was, but most likely late 80s.

Porter built his house in the mid to late 60's.

Chas - I see my earlier comment was confusing. I meant to say I met Porter sometime in the late 80s. Yes I'm aware he had a house there in the 60s.

After thinking about this last night, I realized there was this little place built by Rockefeller on the island.
