Quick Trip in June

Well, I have been thinking of a quick trip to St. Barth but what a situation to consider. 1st Class on United Airlines one way from Washington Dulles to San Juan on June 17 is $471.00 all-inclusive of taxes; economy is $198.00. Tradewind one way from San Juan to St. Barth on same day is $734.50. Tradewind is out of control price wise in my opinion.

Those low fares to SJU always look SO good…until you see the fares from Tradewind. Hope you find a workable solution!

YIKES!

It all depends. For us, flying thru SXM has gotten crazy expensive. Enough more so than SJU that it neutralizes TW pricing.

How much is Dulles to SXM just for comparison?

If you have any flexibility on departure dates and times, they usually have a cheaper fare. I noticed on 6/17 there is a $350 flight that departs SJU at 10:00 am, but I am sure your flight from IAD doesn't land in time.
We always try to "one day it" from Houston but this year we changed it up to take advantage of cheaper air fares and also more time on the island. We are spending $735 roundtrip on TW, however this requires an overnight in SJU going and coming. We are taking the late afternoon flight out of Houston which lands SJU at 8:45 pm. Staying in the hotel at the airport and then have a 6:35 am departure flight to SBH. Villa is unoccupied, so essentially an entire day in SBH on arrival.
Our departure is similar in that we leave Barths at 3:00 pm, overnight San Juan and then return to Houston at 7:00 am the next day. Once again, no one checking in our villa behind us so another pretty full day on the island.

That worked out well. Good job!

Hi Ellen,
I booked United 1st class roundtrip to SXM; first on first off. Easy with a short travel time from home to paradise for me. I do not mind using SBC or Winair (lots of flight options) as I always travel only carryon and SXM has actually become easy to transfer through with carryon and again lots of 15-minute flight options to SBH.
See you soon. By the way $1,517 R/T. Less than round trip on Tradewind alone plus a 1-hour flight which kind of gets boring on Tradewind, just me. The flights that accommodate me with United SJU connection does not work into less priced flights on Tradewind. I prefer not to hang around San Juan or overnight and such to get lesser price fares. I prefer to get straight to my Happy Place on SBH. YMMV

Have you looked at SWA? We've flown out of Hobby and have arrive in time for the last TW flight. Sometimes there is a direct flight and others we've had to connect through somewhere in Florida.

I try to avoid SWA, but we have flown SWA out of Hobby before to SJU. There is only one non-stop on Saturday which gets in too late. The flight you mentioned departs Hobby at 5:25 am with a plane change in Orlando before arriving SJU at 1:25 pm. It's a long day, and travel time for us to Hobby is much more difficult than to Intercontinental.

Our last two years in Barths, we have missed our return flight back due to Tradewind issues....GMP62 was on our flight two years ago. Last year we attempted a landing in SJU during a rain storm, missed the runway, circled a bit, and then the co-pilot told us we were low on fuel and would have to go to St. Thomas. Once we landed STT, everyone and every piece of luggage had to get off the plane to clear customs. What a hassle.

This year we are going to check out of our villa late, have a boozy lunch at Pearl Beach before heading to San Juan. Overnight and then catch the 7:00 am flight to Houston on United.

Sounds like a plan!

Sorry to hear you had 2 consecutive years of TW trip debacles, Rolltide. I recall that terrible day 2 years ago. We are arriving on 4/23 for 10 days. Fingers crossed for smooth TW flying next week. And, I like your game plan for your check-out date. Enjoy!

We went to sxm in February and really enjoyed the airport. Best martinis we ever had at he bar at the far end from SBH Commuter. They are the women than ran the bar in the basement cave for all those years
