Licorne for Dinner

Decided to try this for dinner (only Friday and Saturday) as we have been in a mood for less fancy. We have never been for any of their iterations. Seats maybe 30? We thought we’d be able to walk in, but reserved on the way back from the beach just in case, and good thing, because it was full. One table speaking English, everyone else was local, and younger than us. Who isn’t younger than us these days? lol.

Menu changes daily, presented on a blackboard. I’d say 1/2 fish, 1/2 poultry/meat. Nothing veg only. Wine list on the back has maybe 5 whites, 6 reds, some by the glass. No three figure price points. Small cocktail selection that worked perfectly well.

The dining room is entirely outside, surrounding a huge tree. About 3/4 is covered with white vinyl tarp should it rain. It’s rather plain, mix matched tables, no decor to speak of save for a single string of patio lights and some plants on a fence. A colorful coat of paint, or some small bud vases on tables would work wonders, imo. I bet it’s different during the day, but at night it is a bland and white. Music playlist was just loud enough to hear it, no thumping beats. People were just talking, and lingering. Fancy space, this ain’t so if that is important to you….

First courses were shrimp nems, which ended up as fish fritters w guacamole. they were good, not great, unsure what fish was in them. Mistake but we didn’t fuss because it took several minutes of eating before the other said, “these are the strangest nems”. 🤣. Other was wahoo Mille feuille, layers of fish, Granny Smith apple, and yuzu. It was tart, fresh, and a little spice kick (nothing major). I’m not a fish fan, so having this and enjoying it is a big thing. Hah.

Mains were red snapper filet with mushroom ravioli in a crustacean broth which was described as delicious in between bites and every drop of broth sopped up by bread (which seems only to arrive if you ask for it). Other was cote de porc with butternut squash fritters and sauces. It was super tasty and perfectly cooked. Our plates, save for the porc bone, were clean as whistles. This was very good food.

Dessert was ile flottante (a small portion in a cup) that was as perfect as it could be. Ananas rum came afterwards, oh, how I miss the days this was the norm at every resto, but going more casual we are seeing this tradition more than we would have. 🙂

Pouilly Fume to drink, very fine if not exceptional. Bill was €231, no mention of tips. Still not “cheap” but by SBH standards it sort of is. Haha.

This was, all in all, a delightful dinner and we loved it. 2 waitresses, chef and another cook, and they couldn’t be friendlier. We will absolutely come back before our trip ends.

Now enough with uber casual, we are off to esprit tonight.

Tbh, this has been an excellent dining year. Le Repaire and Tamarin being the only duds in 2 weeks of eating. 🙂

One of our favorite low key dining places. The chef in his past was the sous-chef for Jean-Claude. The mango tree is phenomenal. I like dining with locals, they know the good places.

It’s on Route de Saline, the road that runs from the former MiniMart (now Monoprix Home) towards Grand Fond and Saline. Note that it is in the rear of the building.

It’s a delightfully simple space, evoking really old St.Barths! I go there regularly for lunch . . . occasionally for dinner. My shrimp nems at lunch this week were truly — I’m pretty sure — shrimps! Not a place for glamour, but for authenticity & very good food (at a reasonable price).

I will have to give it a try next year now that I have a better idea where it is located. How far past the Linge St Bart’s store is it?

We made La Licorne our first night dinner spot this trip—bit of a risk since I’d never been and had some newbies in tow. It was phenomenal. Nice low-key atmosphere after a long travel day and a delicious meal. My red snapper filet in a short broth with vegetables was delicious; a really nice crust on the filet and flavorful broth. Three at the table got the “yellow chicken” and raved. Good reviews all around and a charming server. I’d go back!
