Recommendations for San Juan hotel for one night on route to SB

Greetings!

My husband and I are heading to SB in December for 2 glorious weeks. We traveled through SXM, which sadly was a ghost town, in August for a rescheduled SB week stay.

Hoping to make this vacation less stressful and our treating ourselves to a Tradewind flight on our way down (first time!)

We have never been to San Juan and are planning to stay the night and catch a very early flight the next morning. Since we’ve been through the 72 Covid testing once here in Michigan, we feel more prepared this time around.

As Bonvoy members that is usually our first choice, but definitely open to other hotel suggestion. We realize it’s only a short time in the afternoon and evening that we have a chance to do a little exploring, but is staying in Old San Juan a better location choice?

Merci,

Nancy

The San Juan Airport hotel is the best bet for convenience, located at airport...no need for cab rides and close to Tradewinds. Also, I think Tradewinds has a discount code. Recent renovations in last 5 years, but not the best accommodations and not sure if there is any good restaurants nearby for dinner (maybe get food delivered). Or check in and cab to Old San Juan for dinner.

Not to bash San Juan, but if there is any way you can catch the last Tradewinds flight out the same day to SBH which is around 4:00 pm, I would highly recommend it.

I agree with Rolltide, if you can get to St Barths the same day that would be best. If your rental is not available, then get a night at a St Barths hotel (ie, Sunset).

is there not a 14 day quarantine in san juan if you are not transit?

It appears if you fail to have a 72 hour negative PCR test, there is a 14 day quarantine period. Another concern is "spending" a sizable portion of the 72 hours requirement in SJU before you arrive in SBH. Perhaps all of this will be different in December, through ease of testing or relaxation of the 72 hour requirement.

We stay at San Juan airport hotel if we have early morning flight next day...right there in airport and not much of a walk to Tradewind check in...clean and comfortable and continental breakfast offered. And discount with Tradewind..

Having stayed at that hotel, I don't recommend it other than it is right there at the airport, for the early Tradewind flight that was the deciding factor based on recommendations on the Forum. Cancelled the return overnite when checked out. Breakfast a joke. Much nicer to end our 3 weeks on SBH at a beach hotel.

Correct about the questionable breakfast at airport hotel but when catching that early flight to SBH a cup of coffee and a muffin is all you need...a better breakfast awaits upon early arrival on island

. . . and for a “better breakfast” on SBH, remember Le Jardin in the Center across from the airport — yummy scrambled eggs & great lunches!

...We usually stay the the Marriott Stellaris Resort and Casino......Great people and a fun casino, nice beach, good food....5 Minutes from SJU.

We just went to SBH the last part of August and spent a night in San Juan to get the early morning TW flight. We stayed at the Embassy Suites that is very close to the airport. Someone on this forum recommended it which is why we chose it.

It has a casino but it was closed due to Covid and that was fine because there were no crowds in the lobby area. We were very pleased with our accommodations; the room was clean, updated, and very quiet, and the hotel staff was great! They had a taxi waiting to take us to the airport the next morning and that was easy. There are some restaurants within walking distance.

It is not a resort and I would not go there for my “vacation”, but if we did this trip again I would certainly stay there.

We had our Covid test done and got the results 24 hours later. We flew to SJU that day and then on to SBH the next morning. Make sure that you have a hard copy of your Covid PCR test because the SJU airport is quite thorough in checking before they will let you leave the airport to spend the night. They took our contact information and sent a text every day for 14 days making sure that we had no symptoms.
