August 15- Holy Day

France is considered la fille aînée de l'Église catholique, so yes, France is traditionally, culturally a Roman Catholic nation. How observant the French are these days is another question . . .

I looked up the difference between Ascension and Assumption Days- http://www.rosarychurch.net/answers/qa082000a.html

That is a bit incomplete. The Gospel of John uses the active concept of ascension in regard to Christ. One very important example is 3:13 - "No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the son of man". Mark, Luke and Acts use the passive concept of assumption. The use of both active and passive terms can be considered to reflect the divine and human for Christ.

The feast celebrated today is one of the assumption of a human. Other issues regarding today's holy day (e.g., its biblical, or lack of biblical basis, and whether Mary "died" or assumption occurred without death) may also be of interest to some.
