ANGLE OF REPOSE by Wallace Stegner

A beautifully written tale of the old West. The story is told by an historian writing the biography of his Eastern bred grandmother and the man, an engineer, who she marries and follows to the Dakotas, Idaho, Mexico and other points west.

The narrator skips from the present to talk about the letters, writings and drawings he is sorting through and organizing in order to tell his family’s story. The writing is superb and the story still timely. This award winner was written in 1971 and I am so glad someone pointed me toward it. The grandparents, Susan and Oliver, are incredible characters and I will remember and admire them for a long long time.

A nice find, Amy. I will look for it at the library. It is uplifting to read a finely-crafted book—some authors raise the bar with their eloquence.
