When we fell in love with St. Barths

We honeymooned in St. Barths in 1987. I had never been to the Caribbean and Cheryl had many times. Since we were going in June we needed an Island that had tradwins. She found St. Barths. Back then it had not been discovered yet. We honeymooned at El Sereno. I remember that when we traveled out of JFK we were the only ones with a beach umbrella on the luggage racks. The restaurants were amazing...Guanahani the first night, Le Pelican, Innes Ghetto, Au Port, Le Select, L”Annais, Le Flamboyant up in the hills by the tennis courts and of course Chez Francine I believe was the name on the beach at St. Jean where we had the most delicious baby shark ever. We also had breakfast at a place called Eden Rock before it was the current manifestation. A housekeeper cooked us breakfast on the veranda. The greatest take away was this...exhausted at the end of the first day we were getting ready for sleep. We took our lenses out and place the in those old containers that plugged into the electrical socket to cook its bad stuff away. We were shocked when we went to plug them in since the plugs didn’t work. No one informed us about 120 or 220. We freaked out! Called the front desk at around 12 midnight. The chef from the restaurant called us to the kitchen. He surveyed the situation and placed our lens recepticals in a pot of boiling water. That is what we did every night. Yes the restaurants the beaches the food the drinks the layed back ambience...every night when I take my lenses out I reach back to that honeymoon at St. Barths when the head chef boiled our lenses every night. How about you? What made you fall in love with St. Barths? We are returning this May.

Re: When we feel in love with St. Barths

Marvelous remembrances! And great recollection of memorable restaurants. It was a magical period. Thanks for sharing!

Good memories. Pelican is now Nikki Beach, but many locals still refer to that section of the beach as Pelican Beach. L'Ananas is now Ociela. Ines' Ghetto, which was the original Eddy's Ghetto, is now Galawa (formerly Pipiri Palace), Flamboyant is gone, as is Chez Francine, which is now Pearl Beach.

your post brings back nice memories....we also started visiting St Barts in the late 80's....and we have fond memories of some of the same restaurants and of several that have come and gone. We still talk about eating ribs at the "grill" area of Eden Rock as the server (we remember his name...Bernard) danced around to Dire Straits music playing on the "sound system".
In a few weeks we will re-visit the Island to hopefully create some new memories...

It is called Pelican Beach because when we first stayed on that side of St Jean there were actual Pelicans there but no more. Last I saw them they were in front of BAZ Bar.

and I believe in 1987 Eddy's Ghetto was still Eddy's.. Inez Choisy didn't take it over until later when Eddy moved around the corner to his present location... but those are the kinds of nice memories that many of us have of St Barth, when it was still a laid back Caribbean outpost.. and not what it has become today...

Our very 1st restaurant was off our long ago Windstar cruise, 1st time to SBH, went to Eden Roc, as spelled then & preferable spelling, in probably only taxi on the island, great lunch on terrace, down the hill for the taxi facing a field of goats, many many goats! On our 1st staying trip, Vaval, La Cremaillere sp? Eddy's Ghetto...dirt floor ? La Marine. Later trips L' Escale, an Italian restaurant by Le Village, Wall House, Francois Plantation, place in Marigot on water ? Sapotillier, Au Port-Clauda Schiffer too. Le Ti long ago before serving dinner was breakfast, maybe lunch ? one dinner there the recently departed Lee Radziwill & husband near our table. Great reminiscing ! AndyNap how's my spelling ?

My wife and I were honeymooning on St. Martin (Dutch side) in 1989. We never liked the flash and casinos...I look to get away on vacation...read a good book...have a great meal...I'm in the investment business and at the time, SB had very little internet or cell phone coverage from US....so when we went, I was really off and relaxed...We came over on a day trip on a sailboat from SM and instantly...I knew I was "home"...the vibe was different...the people were different...it was chic...all in one day....came back the next year for our first trip in 1990...stayed at the Guanahani...first night meal was at the Marigot Beach Club....fresh caught lobster...will never have another memory like that...the magic...next night...dinner at the Guanahani...anyways...30 years later, 2 kids later...a lot of bills later...and about 20 trips to the island...yes, it's changed...Andy is gone from the Hideaway...the Marigot Bay Club is gone...this time...just me and the wife for our 30yr anniversary...in March...no kids....can't wait...

Happy 30th Anniversary, hope you both enjoy a lovely time together. Anita and I alternate private time alone and family. Works well for us :D

Such a romantic and serene dinner location. It now is the site of a villa.
Yes, it was all of romantic & serene, which was — in part — why I wanted to be at Marigot Bay when looking for a Villa 15+ years ago. Among places I was shown was the forlorn-looking deck of the Marigot Bay Club, after it had closed. I was deterred, however, despite happy memories, by remembering all the castoff langouste shells that were casually tossed out a kitchen window into a semblance of a composte pile. Living there, I recall thinking, would have been a bit like invading a sacred burial ground!

We were a 33 year old couple in 1982, 2nd time to the Caribbean, who went to les Castelets. As the grand piano played, we watched the storm come in over the mountain at eye level while having a scotch. I will never forget the majesty of that place.
