There was rain and sun on Saturday, but only happiness at Select for the 69th anniversary. This time there were many Swedish friends because of the other special anniversary. Marius arrived after 10:30 and stayed until around 3. Here's the first batch of photos. Le Select is an important part of the St. Barth history and was again for the 69th.

Great pics. I'm sad it will be closed while we are there...but I'm glad we will be there in just over a week!

A great gathering, for sure . . . and a stark contrast to this morning’s scene, with tables & chairs gone from the patio, and Select locked tight. Kind of like closing Times Square in NY!

This was reported by Le Journal earlier today in reference to the closure. (Google translate)

DRUG TRAFFICKING: THE CLOSED SELECTION FOR ONE MONTH
by V.A 12/11/2018
Administrative closure of thirty days for the oldest bar on the island, from November 12 to December 12, after the dismantling of drug trafficking.

After celebrating with great pomp its 69 years of existence, Saturday, the Sélect remained closed this Monday, November 12th. It is the object of an administrative closure decided by the prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin.

In late July, the gendarmerie had arrested seven people suspected of selling cannabis and cocaine in the rue du General-de-Gaulle, near the bar Le Select. Among them, four young men must be tried Thursday, November 15 for drug trafficking.

In and around the bar

The investigation also showed that the long-established traffic was known to the bar's management and that it was even partly in the building. "The facts were in direct relation with the operating conditions and the frequentation of the establishment", stipulates the decree of administrative closure, posted on the facade of the Select. The managers were received by the prefecture, which left them a margin of maneuver in the dates of application of the administrative closure, a duration of thirty days. It regrets that they did not alert the authorities of this traffic.

Anyone walking around there anytime of day knew the trafficking was going on right across the street.... been the case for years....

Anyone walking around there anytime of day knew the trafficking was going on right across the street.... been the case for years....

This regulation, Article L3332-15, may be the basis of the closure given the quote included in Le Journal ("Les faits ont été en relation directe avec les conditions d’exploitation et la fréquentation de l’établissement").

From my reading of the law, it seems that
- an order to close must be preceded by a warning.
- to justify closure, offenses must be related to the use of the establishment or its operating conditions.
- a longer closure could have been ordered.

Pascale - my interpretation of a French law has limitations so please comment freely if I am wrong.

Glad the druggies have been removed. There was always an element there with a feeling different than anywhere else on the island! For the better! Lock them up!
