The German Girl

I try to suggest books that are off-the-beaten path. "The German Girl" is such a novel and it is emotional and engrossing. It is based on the true story of the transatlantic liner "St. Louis" which set sail in 1939 (with more than 900 passengers) from Hamburg, Germany bound for Havana, Cuba. The author, Armando Lucas Correa, weaves a tale that switches back and forth from the 1930s to 2014, illuminating his central characters with artistic imagery. It is a masterful work. You will come away wanting to learn much more about the chapters in history depicted by Correa.
