I went in to use the bathroom this morning on my morning exercise. there was a note in french on the bathroom door, I do read french, but did not take the time to read as I was in a hurry and it was a page long.
when I came out, someone at the counter is yelling at me, her words in english EXCUSE ME!, I was leaving but turned around to see what she wanted. she said to me, now you have used the bathroom, you have to buy something. I explained that I am exercising and carry no money. she again said that I needed to buy something. I informed her that I go to the petite colombe in colombier every day and buy something. she said then I needed to use the bathroom there and not in lorient. she said she cleans the bathroom and does not want to clean up after someone that does not buy anything. This is a place I have used the bathroom without buying something only twice by the way since I have lived here.
at this point I give up and leave, but I am thinking of speaking with the owner in colombier as they own both places. I just thought it was a little crazy to treat someone like that. I was in and out of that bathroom in 2 minutes, I had drank a lot of water.
I remember when I worked for my father at the age of 13 in one of his restaurants. his policy was if someone comes in and orders a glass of water and is just resting at one of the tables and they look like they might be hungry, we were to go over and tell them this was their lucky day, they are the 1000th customer and the meal today is free. he never wanted to embarass anyone, so he used this ploy to feed them and they could keep their dignity. one day we had 4 1000th customers, my father just smiled when he looked at the receipts.
I cannot imagine telling someone in a public place that they could not use the restroom, I know in some of the resorts in the states, they do this, but have never seen it here. very sad indeed.
