Eden Rock, St. Barts

NEW YORK, United States, Tuesday September 6, 2016 – St Barts, a popular playground of the rich and famous in the French West Indies, now has the distinction of being home to the best hotel in the world, according to Conde Nast Traveller readers.
Eden Rock received the accolade in the 2016 Conde Nast Traveller’s Readers’ Choice Awards, which also saw the luxurious up-market property take top place in the Americas and Caribbean category of the awards.
Not content to rest on its laurels, St Barts also bagged third spot in the best hotels in the Americas and Caribbean with Cheval Blanc, which was nudged out of second place by the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, California.
Eden Rock, part of the Oetker Collection which includes such prestigious properties as The Lanesborough in London and Le Bristol in Paris, was not the only win for the group, with Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, taking the honours for the best hotel in the Europe, Turkey and Russia category.
Eden Rock in St Barts is noted for its unique design, meandering on, in and around a spectacular ocean outcrop.
The intimate retreat has 34 guest rooms and villas, each with its own individual charm. Some are dotted along the pristine sandy beaches while others are nestled in the lush tropical gardens.
For foodies, master chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten ensures that the cuisine maintains award-winning standards

While Eden Rock is a world class (now corporate run) property we have come to see it in a different light the last couple of years. Based on the way the hotel is run these days it's no longer where the 'smart money' stays on the island IMHO. Last Xmas the beach staff attempted to charge us $500€ per beach chair for each member of our group. We protested. They backed down. In August it was 50€/chair. We again protested. They again backed down. Both times they knew we had dining reservations for six adults.

A beautiful place to visit but not a good value relative to other hotels on the island. Happy to pay a premium on St. Bart's but don't like feeling ripped off.
