didier's images convinced me to try DxO, so I downloaded the 30 day free trial (no watermarks either) and gave it a shot. My first attempts on post-processing a few RAW images with the software

My camera doesn't qualify for Raw conversion- I have software for that anyway- but is it worth it for the other features?
 
Have you done any on display comparison against e.g. Apple's Aperture?

The pictures do look great but that would be the case with any raw conversion. Didier's photos looked like they were hdr-like from a single raw photo.
 
It has HDR filters of several kinds. Using a RAW image, enough variations of exposure and color balance can be created to get a HDR effect. Yes Andy RAW will give you the image that the camera captured rather than a compressed JPG. A much greater range of adjustments can be made. Petri, the trial is good for 30 days, so download it!
