Verizon sells out pre-orders in a day

Verizon Wireless stopped taking pre-orders for the iPhone Thursday evening after exhausting supplies. It was only offered to existing customers of the carrier. Buyers will now have to wait until Wednesday for another chance to buy online or Thursday in a store.

It didn't take long for Verizon Wireless to exhaust its supply of Apple Inc.'s iPhones available for pre-order by existing customers.
By early Thursday evening, the message on the carrier's home page was telling people to come back on Feb. 9 or go to a store on Feb. 10.
It's not known how many of the popular Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) devices the company sold after it began taking orders at 3 a.m. on Thursday.
AppleInsider reported this week that Verizon employees were urged to wait to buy iPhones for themselves and their families. Chief Operating Officer John Stratton wrote in the companywide e-mail, "Demand will be unprecedented."
