Waterville Valley Ski Area Sold

Waterville Valley, NH, October 10, 2010

On Sunday, Oct. 10, Waterville Valley Holdings announced that it has purchased the principal assets of the Waterville Valley Resort, including the Waterville Valley Ski Area, Waterville Valley Conference Center, and the Town Square, from Booth Creek Ski Holdings.

The announcement has created a buzz of excitement in Waterville Valley and renews enthusiasm throughout the Northeast for this beloved world class four-season resort.

“Chris Sununu confirmed to the New Hampshire Sunday News that the ski area assets have been purchased by the Sununu family and a group of local area investors,” said Bill Cantlin, president of Waterville Company, Inc., master developer of the resort. “This will bring a renewed vitality to our entire community and will be a tremendous stimulus to the Waterville Valley resort,” Cantlin said.

Tom Corcoran, founder of Waterville Valley Resort and chairman of the Waterville Company, said he’s very enthusiastic about the change in ownership of the resort’s major facilities.

“It has been 16 years since Waterville Valley’s principal assets were owned and managed by New Hampshire people. I welcome the return to local ownership committed to build upon Waterville Valley’s reputation as New Hampshire’s premier four-season resort community,” said Corcoran.

Corcoran, who retired from active management of the Waterville Company in 1999, added, “The time is right to welcome the next generation of primary and second-home owners to join our special community in the mountains.”

Corcoran’s Waterville Company sold the ski area and conference center in 1994. Booth Creek bought the Waterville Valley assets in 1996. The Waterville Company continues as master developer of the resort and owns the developable private land in Waterville Valley, as well as the historic Waterville Valley Golf Course and the resort’s largest real estate brokerage firm.

Bill Cantlin noted, “In real estate, it is all about location and timing. Waterville Valley is the location and the time may never be better.”

Cantlin added, “Property ownership in Waterville Valley is a sound investment in one’s family and lifestyle. With Waterville Valley Holdings committed to build on Waterville Valley’s reputation as New Hampshire’s premier four-season resort, there will certainly be renewed interest in Waterville Valley’s attractive real estate opportunities.” According to an article in the Oct. 10 New Hampshire Sunday News, “The new management’s focus will be on bringing back New Hampshire and regional families and returning world class events to the resort.”

Waterville Valley is a year-round resort community popular with families, active retirees and outdoor enthusiasts. Originally settled in the 1800s, the modern-day Waterville Valley, which is one of the country’s leading master-planned resort communities, was founded in 1965 by two-time Olympic skier Tom Corcoran. After a successful international ski racing career, Corcoran scoured New England looking for a mountain he could develop into a year-round resort. When he saw Waterville Valley, Corcoran knew it was the right place. His company purchased most of the developable private land on the valley floor, which is surrounded by the 770,000-acre White Mountain National Forest.

Over the past 45 years, Waterville Valley has become one of New England’s most treasured communities – as a place to live and play by both primary and second home owners. In addition to world-class downhill skiing, Waterville Valley offers an extensive cross-country skiing network, award-winning tennis facilities and a 9-hole golf course, a first-rate elementary school (K-8), and one of the most successful ski academies in the country, an indoor ice arena, athletic club, boating, fishing, swimming, and an extensive hiking trail system mostly in the surrounding National Forest. A thriving arts community has grown, with a professional Shakespeare repertory company, children’s theatre, concerts, art exhibits, lectures, and more.
