Pitea Day and The Gustavialoppet, November 14 and 15
Swedish Accent In Saint Barth

For the second consecutive year, Pitea Day, which celebrates the twin cities of Saint Barth and Pitea in northern Sweden, will be held at the same time as the Gustavialoppet, the Swedish marathon which marks its 19th edition this year. The events will be held on the weekend of November 14 and 15.

Launched in 1991, reviving a marathon previously held on the island, the Gustavialoppet (which means "Race of Gustavia" in Swedish) serves as a reminder that Saint Barth was under Swedish rule for almost 100 years. From 1784 to 1878, the island flew the Swedish flag before being returned to France, its former ruler. The event brings Swedish runners to participate in this race every year.

To participate:
Registration for the Gustavialoppet is open through November 13 at the territorial swimming pool in Saint Jean (Tel 0590 27 60 96). A medical certificate dated within the past three months, or a sports license is required. The entrance fee for the race is 15 euros, which includes race number and a Pasta Party at the school canteen in Gustavia.

Ellen,

Bless you for the translation. Do you know what is the course for this year's Gustavialoppet? Whatever it is, I have to believe it's a killer. There ain't much flat land on that little island.

I've run it in the past. In the past, its been a week earlier. Often its the weekend before Thanksgiving.

It starts at the stadium behind Match and goes over La Tourment and hits both sides of the harbor in Gustavia

I hear this year its just two times around Gustavia starting at the commercial dock in Public, flatter than usual. I'll check to make sure...

Interesting that the running race starts at 8:30, and the Red Cross gets to show off their skills at 9:30.
