John,
Unfortunately, I did not see all of the concert as my escort got up and was ready to leave before several encores. Needless to say, I was a bit heartbroken then and the next morning. I learned a good lesson about who to invite to a concert. He did bring an exquisite 94 Bordeaux for tailgating though so I have to give him credit for his taste in wine (and women).
I tried to do the iphone Mobile Upload thing on Facebook, but without my reading glasses I was blind for the night.
Thanks for posting this article - it let me relive a few really amazing moments. And for a rock concert review, this is unbelievably well-written. We need to get Jon Pareles writing reviews of St. Barths for us.
A few highlights for me...
Walk On - the U2 tribute to the Nobel Laureate
Aung San Suu Kyi. She is a real living hero to me. One of my favorite inspirational quotes ever is her words, "When you are feeling helpless, help someone."
There was video footage by Desmond Tutu as a prelude to One which was really joyful and inspiring.
Quincy Jones was in the audience and Bono playfully sang a bit of Michael Jackson's Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough for him. It was a great moment.
And it was Bruce's 60th birthday and Bono was playing in Bruce's kingdom. Bono had all of us singing "He's the One" instead of Bruce "She's the One" in Bruce's honor and then the song broke into Desire which was unbelievable. I waited and waited and expected Bruce to come out on stage, but alas, no such luck.
So, I've calmed down from missing the last hour or so of the concert and am even playing with the idea of attending the upcoming show in DC on Tuesday night with an adventuresome friend. We'll see.
Thanks again for posting the article - it really captured the best of the evening. If you are a U2 fan, there are still ridiculously over-priced seats for Tuesday night. I'll bring the Bordeaux.
