This is a story, true, about the Nazi prison fortress, Colditz Castle. Here the Germans kept captured officers be they French, Dutch, British or Polish. Secluded and heavily guarded. All the prisoners had a common goal, escape. At first they worked tunneling and scheming among their own colleagues. Then after several failed attempts they shared knowledge.
The cleverness, brotherhood and dedication are truly admirable. The plot is serious and humorous as well as the officers created uniforms from scraps to blend in with German units to walk out rather than dig out. At times I thought of the classic Bridge over the River Kwai. At times I thought of Hogan’s Heroes and that riotous gang of prisoners. Mostly I admired the dedication and bravery and unfailing spirit of so many prisoners of war as we learn about their trials and tribulations to regain their freedom.
