Day 7 (plus Days 5 & 6)

Taking a break.

Pre-trip stress (organizing, market drops, etc...), getting here, trying to do too much the first couple of days and plenty of poolside rosé finally caught up. Maybe the real vacation starts? Wednesday began (too) early with a five o'clock sunrise, breakfast in the villa and then chasing down chicken breasts and steaks up and down the stores across from the airport. Finally we stopped at the Boucherie Ché Yo, a first. A bit pricey, but the butcher was very pleasant and helpful. Does anyone know his name? Back to the villa, sandwiches were made and taken out to the beach while the maid cleaned the villa. Breeze was minimal and even under an umbrella, the heat was pretty intense. Nothing terrible, but once back inside in the A/C I crawled under the covers and didn't wake up for about eighteen hours! Since Thursday was a holiday we spent the whole day in and around the villa with dinner being grilled steaks and green beans. Early to bed and after another twelve hours of sleep, the balance has been restored.

Friday was a real treat as we headed over to Santa Fé and lunch with Phil and Amy. Made a couple of stops for Euros and Cafe Gloriette for Rhum Vanille to take home. Verified that they will be closing on August 1 for good and that the rhum will still be available in the stores. Still sad as I like buying directly from the Gloriette people rather than the anonymous "Super U". Being Memorial Day weekend, Gustavia seemed more crowded than earlier in the week, with traffic backed up from the ferry terminal to Le Select and packs of people, rather than couples, everywhere. Parking doesn't look fun the next few days. Anyway, arrived in Lurin to be greeted by David' smiling face, who escorted us out to the deck where Phil and Amy are already enjoying the breezes. Couple of hours of thoroughly enjoyable conversation about island activities, family and even current events. No moules today, so I elected for the vaunted "Supreme Poulet...". Wow! Rolled chicken breast stuffed with foie gras sitting a pool of beef demi-glace contained by a border of pureed potatoes. Not a dish I would normally eat on the island, but maybe the lack of moules was for a reason? Lynn had her usual gazpacho, Phil a chicken caesar salad and Amy a delicious hamburger. Bucking an apparent trend on the island, David offered up the first rhum shots of the trip. Salut!

Back to the villa for some poolside reading, a nice sunset and dinner of the beforementioned chicken, breaded with a beurre blanc sauce made with a bit of the accompanying Chablis. Just as we were finishing up, booms were heard off to the east. Nothing could be seen, but after firing up the laptop and scanning the various webcams, we caught the end of some fireworks over Eden Rock, albeit in fuzzy black and white.

After speculating what the "W" stood for, it is apparently owned by Weathertech founder. Who would guess car mats were so lucrative.

Restoration, getting back to center and time spent with Phil and Amy are a few of the many key reasons I visit St Barth. Well done, y’all.
