“When We Were Young and Brave” by Hazel Gaynor

I have learned about so many little-known episodes of World War II through the authors who have researched these stories and brought them to life. This book is about the group of schoolchildren and their teachers who were captured in China and taken to an internment camp for the duration of the war. The archives of the Chefoo School yielded valuable information and Gaynor used it, along with her own experience as a Brownie and Girl Guide to put flesh on the bones of this tale. The result is a gripping and emotional read. As she states in the insights portion. “…the older I get and the more I learn about the world wars, they feel more important and relevant than ever. I hope we will keep discovering, writing, reading, and sharing these stories. They are part of all our pasts, and we must never forget them.” My sentiments exactly.
