DOUBLE SITUATION TRANSAT AND WEEKEND WEATHER Friday 14 May, the sailors tackled along the Spanish coast to cross the dreaded Cape Finisterre in the evening. A complicated night is now looming in a sustained wind. The two leaders, Guyot Environnement - Ruban Rose and Bretagne - CMB Performance, are neck and neck, followed by a compact pack. Sun, smoothness, beautiful slips under spinnaker, double-digit speeds, flat sailing ... This is exactly what the 36 sailors of the Transat en Double - Concarneau - Saint-Barthélemy do not experience. currently. But it is also their medium-term outlook (probably Sunday morning), and what gives them balm in their hearts Saturday May 15 In the morning, under a south-westerly wind of 15 to 20 knots, they will begin a long edge with a southerly heading along the Portuguese coast. The sea will gradually become less rough and speeds will accelerate. Their objective will be to find the Portuguese trade wind as quickly as possible, which will set up on the other side of the ridge located at the latitude of Lisbon. In the meantime, in the afternoon, the fleet will continue to sail upwind in a south-westerly wind of about fifteen knots. In the evening, the wind will start to weaken as the ridge approaches. The wind will take a little right to orient itself to the unstable west-southwest sector. The following night, the wind will continue to weaken, moving west-north-west with the arrival of the ridge. The navigation speeds will slow down, and this period could prove to be decisive because the sailors will have to avoid the risk of light winds even if a little air should be observed on the right edge of the Azores high pressure system. You should always be wary of this type of situation which can be conducive to the faster arrival of the backbone on the fleet. Sunday May 16 At the end of the morning, the wind will continue to take from the right to move north-west around 10 knots. The fleet will find good conditions for progress, in a downwind allowing them to gradually accelerate. However, it is not until the evening of this Sunday after having passed the latitude of Lisbon that the conditions will become really favorable to accelerate. The wind will take a north-northwest component and will strengthen between 12 and 18 knots, possibly a little more. A rapid navigation under the Portuguese trade winds will then begin, which will propel them towards tropical latitudes. This will put an end to the cool and wet conditions that the skippers have experienced so far. www.transatendouble.bzh Cyril Bonnefoy, Météo Consult

JEK will be happy I googled ‘petanque’ and found out the differences between bocce, and petanque and what the term boules covers.
Is petanque the game we see people playing near the water as one enters Gustavia from the Public area? We thought it was some form of bocce all these years.
We read petanque balls are smaller; made of steel and thrown differently than bocce balls.
    Learned something new.

I don’t know how you dig things up from 14 years ago. I guess the search and ‘pétanque.’ Thank you for your info about the game.
