1,000 feral cats released onto Chicago streets to tackle rat explosion

Re: 1,000 neutered feral cats released onto Chicago streets to tackle rat explosion

After humanely capturing the feral cats, the humane society spays or neuters the animals and places them into residential and commercial settings with rodent infestations to act as an environmentally friendly rodent control.

The answer

We have friends in Chicago who have fed feral cats for years and have never had rat problems.
We see what we believe are feral cats in numerous areas around the island. We have been told by residents that like Chicago, the cats control the rat population.

Double edged sword. They do eat many rodents; however they eat many birds also. In Hawaii they are sending some birds to extinction.

Not sure why this made me think of the old nursery rhyme "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly". But I hope we don't have horses running around on the streets of Chicago

“There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” Lyrics

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd to swallow a bird!
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cat;
Fancy that! She swallowed a cat!
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady that swallowed a dog;
What a hog, to swallow a dog!
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a goat;
She just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’ll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cow;
I don’t know how she swallowed a cow!
She swallowed the cow to catch the goat,
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her!
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don’t know why she swallowed a fly – Perhaps she’s dead
There was an old lady who swallowed a horse;…She’s dead, of course!

I don't think that 1000 cats over 9 years is going to make a dent in the rat population of a city the size of Chicago. I would think the cats probably live in fear. Now on the subject of deterrence. if you have roaches, get some chickens!

Oh my goodness - this was our daughter’s FAVORITE book when she was little. For some reason my mother could not stand the premise of the story, and couldn’t understand why our daughter was so entranced by something “so horrible.”

I will definitely have to listen to the Burl Ives’ version!

I still have nightmares about all my up close and personal rat encounters during my time in Chicago.

Deadliest weekend of the year in Chicago: 12 killed, 42 wounded in shootings

Nearly all of the violence happened in neighborhoods on the South and West sides identified last fall as priority areas where police and other resources were to be boosted.

And they're worried about rats?
