“The Exiles” by Christina Baker Kline

The author of “Orphan Train” does it again—-a well-researched book based on actual events. The story revolves around the experiences of women convicts sent from Britain to Australia to serve their sentences; it is woven into the parallel tale of a native girl who is being “civilized.” Fascinating details. A deep dive into motives and mannerisms. It resonated with me since some of my English ancestors were convicts sent to Australia. They served their sentences for petty crimes, bought land and settled in New South Wales where their descendants are today upstanding members of society. Australia has not shied from recognizing the past and the convicts who became the proud citizens of a new land. If you enjoy historical novels, this one will engross you.

Julianne, you had me at ORPHAN TRAIN. On my list now.

I also am reminded of and highly recommend an oldie “1000 WHITE WOMEN”...Releasing American women when Grant was in office to settle the West and pairing them with Native Americans to populate the frontier.
