This is fantastic news....our current reservations are for an arrival date of the 27th. Let's hope the negotiations are successful while keeping the island safe!

What authority does the Tourism Committee and Nils Dufau have?
To the optimist the glass is half full.
To the pessimist the glass is half empty.
To the engineer the glass is simply too big.

95 new cases during the last week is a record we believe for the island. Let’s hope with better behavior on island and shutting down the access to, maybe the # of new cases will settle down.

Where did you get that? Kevin posted 60 new cases.

Uh huh. I think I’ll take Kevin’s chart from the official reporting agency instead of a Chinese data agency.

Re: Note from the Tourism Committee

The increase of 95 total cases occurred during the 2 week interval from 1/24-2/7 not a 1 week interval. ARS numbers that have been reported and updated by Kevin in this thread are referenced below.

The total confirmed cases reported through 2/7 was 455, which is also the number reported by worldometer (Hopper's reference).

This total was 60 higher than the total (395) reported through 1/31 and 95 higher than the total reported through 1/24 (360).

Looking at the graph that Hopper provides, the interval between the most recent data points is larger than between many prior entries on that graph. The data point immediately preceding the current one appears to match with the 60 case increase that was reported on 1/24 relative to 1/17 (300 total).

It appears that St Barth data had not been updated for 2 weeks on the worldometer site.

Right. Kevin posts the official site every week. I don’t know why anyone would go to a different source and then misconstrue the information.

Merlah, there is an ongoing negotiation between the island government and the French national government on the time and terms of the reopening. At this point no one has answers. All will become clear within a week or so.

I don’t think negotiations are the sort of thing one would find on a website. Check back here often, we may be among the first to report the outcome. Le Journal de Saint Barth often posts updates on island news on Facebook. Forum member AndyNap has his internet radio tuned to that channel 24/7

Since this us being linked to protection from variants and the main emphasis in France currently is on the more transmissible variant that was initially detected in Britain, a couple of things to consider....

The French Health Minister reported yesterday that this variant has been increasing and now accounts for 25% of cases in France. For Paris/Ile de France, the frequency is about 40%: The other known variants of concern are in low single digits.

In the US, this variant is estimated to have relatively low, but increasing frequency. It is predicted to become dominant in the US by mid-March. Buying time while getting people vaccinated is being advocated.

French Polynesia seems to be closed till April 1 for Tourism. Perhaps an indication for St Barths ??

Re: Note from the Tourism Committee

Let's not lose sight of the fact that SBH case rates per 100,000 are now very high. 46 cases in a week translates to a case rate of 646 per 100K - compared to 224 for the US and 192 for France as a whole. From CDC website https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tra...l-counts-rates. So tourism officials claiming that the number of cases is "stable and controlled" is unfortunately not credible.

Re: Note from the Tourism Committee

I don't think you can make that kind of a statistical extrapolation...first, it's too small a size and in a very, very different context and reality.
I hardly think Covid is out of control in St. Barths...

Yes.. but also in the US there is not the level of tracking of strains that is done in Europe.

Given that the economy of St. Barths is vastly dependent on tourism, he has an important role as a spokesperson for the Collectivité.

I live in Paris and this whole "proclamation" on the part of the government to restrict travel to French overseas territories-- I believe-- has a lot to do with the timing of French school vacations. Their main target was Guadeloupe and Martinique which receives hundreds of thousands of travelers from France. They specifically mentioned they did not want a massive influx of Covid to those destinations (or Réunion for that matter).

I don't work for the government but I find February 28th an interesting date to be mentioned because.... coincidentally.... that would coincide with the end of the vacation period... ;-)

yes, that is the goal...after the French school holidays end. You need to keep paying attention. Things change daily.

This forum is a great source for current regulations. Take a deep breath.
