Blasphemy?

My first laughs of the day reading these! My own story is in 1970 flying from SXM to Saba daytrip with then boyfriend. Those who have been, know that landing space too. On our departure, hurling down the runway, I could see the door was open so yelled to the pilot who in response said, close it !
Boy, that was sage advice.

This doesn't happen to be the guy who flew an old Piper Aztec, is it? Small twin engine with a distinctive nose (the plane, that is...)? This was a pilot who wasn't a kid even 20-30 years ago. I flew with him once - just to take a ride. Without details, it was a very scary experience, and I don't scare easily in a plane!

just went through TSA Pre in Miami this morning…took 2 minutes…in San Juan airport hotel now. We are on 6th floor which seems updated. The bar area has expanded a bit and we just had nightcaps. Took uber over to Fairmont for a nice burger at outside bar earlier. For those of you contemplating staying here it’s not that bad. We will awake tomorrow and walk 15 minutes to Tradewind..

Sounds like you're having a great day / evening. Very happy for you. Perhaps I should try the airport hotel another time. My conclusion at my last stay there, however, after numerous visits, was that I'd rather take a taxi or airport shuttle to an accommodation that surpasses "not that bad."

It was 1990 or ‘91 when I flew with him and he was maybe mid twenties at that time. It was a small twin engine plane but I don’t really know makes and models other than a Cessna. My best friend in Anguilla had a Cessna 182 RG and we flew the wings off that thing.

FWIW, and since I started this thread with what cab be called some bewilderment, on the flight out yesterday, my wife and I were the only two passengers (12:55 p.m. departure). So that was nice. And getting walked through SJU for our first time through customs, USDA and finally to United was very helpful. And for further WIW, San Juan was back to normal lines were nice and short.

we stayed at the SJU airport hotel in February and it was just fine. I would do it again

They also updated their breakfast area. Had scrambled eggs and sausage this morning. They had a very nice buffet set up and the staff could not have been nicer.
For late day arrival and early morning departure the hotel is pretty good. Seems to have stepped up their game. Very interesting artwork on display throughout which gave it a nice touch.

I don.t think it was Air Frederick....what happened is couldn.t get on Tradewinds...and I looked up somewhere...internet...phone book...but not in person at airport...found another charter service and booked them...I sent them a complaint letter after the fact...bottom line, wifey was not happy with me...probably should have not flown...but we were all packed and at airport...but she's used to it...I've had a couple of these...like the time I went skydiving with my college roommate for his 30th birthday...didn.t tell her...and my parachute failed to open...hit a lot of trees coming down...survived...had to tell her after the fact...she was not amused...but still married after 36 years..lol...as she tells her friends...life is never boring with me...

I have used tradewind from the get go when they started the service to st. barths to san juan. you must have overlooked the amazing ham & cheese sandwiches in the fridge at the lounge plus all the fruit and coffees etc. you must be speaking of the chips soda and beer in the small cooler in the plane.

I love it, but understand if you prefer the overcrowded conditions at st. maarten. plus commuter only uses one pilot. although a ten minute or so ride from sxm to sbh, could you take over if the pilot became unable to fly? winair uses 2 pilots that makes it a much safer flight in my opinion, their prices are almost double to commuter prices, but 2 pilots is the reason for the extra fare charges.

Yes , the cost is more with tradewind, but I love the experience always. esp. the trip from sbh to sju. after arriving, there is no long wait to go through customs etc. you can get vip with tradewind, I never have used vip as they seem to offer it regardless. I was with someone that needed a wheel chair and the assistant pushed him all the way to the rental car place when we were staying in sju for a few days. we did give the assistant a tip.
I 2nd everything you stated!!-I could not agree more!!

Ok, have not read all the posts. I know there are experienced pilots here, like myself. Tradewind is a Part 135 US carrier. Their maintenance, training, and oversight is monitored closely I am sure. I, for one doubt if any airline operating out of SXM is as safe. And no single pilot ops for me. Even if you can fly an airplane, things happen fast at low altitudes, and you may not be able to recover the aircraft as fast. I know Tradewind is costly, but maybe not compared to a cheeseburger at SBH!

In May of 2022 a Cessna Grand Caravan was successfully landed by a passenger with no flying experience in Miami when the pilot had a medical emergency. Pretty amazing! The guy must have nerves of steel.

Tradewind is always available by phone and provides friendly, helpful service.
Mme C had to cancel her TW flight at last minute a year ago. Quick phone call and she had full fare credit to use for this year’s flights.
In 2023 we had booked a night in San Juan with first flight out the following morning on Tradewind to SBH. When we landed SJU we went to the TW desk just to make sure all was good for the flight the next day and they told us they had room on a flight leaving about an hour later that they could move us to if we wanted. We declined, very regretfully as it turned out, one of the worst hotel experiences I've ever had (my own fault, tried to get cute in Old San Juan). We land in SJU around 245 if all goes according to plan this year and again have the following morning flight booked (I wanted to make sure we wouldn't miss any of our time on island!), but I'm hopeful they'll be able to offer us the same deal as last time if there is room. They seem very accommodating. Just get me to SBH.
