Hotels in San Juan

I just stayed at the airport hotel in January when our Tradewinds crew got to PR customs too late for us to be able to leave on the last flight to SBH before it got dark. It is basic and nothing special, but it was nice to just get up and go the next morning for the first plane to SBH...
I feel the same way, Tiffany . . . subject to qualifications that (a) I recommend wearing sox or slippers when walking around the guest rooms & (b) the schlep from Concourse E, where the hotel is found, to Concourse A, home to Tradewind check-in & lounge, is about 3,600 “steps,” if you’re counting . . . a healthy start to daily exercise.

Another vote for the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel!

Our trek to SBH is a long one, and if we are flying Tradewind, we‘re looking to travel as stress-free as we can….that means no worries about sketchy hotel stays. (lesson learned years ago after a night in a budget airport hotel at ORD where we slept in our clothes and never took our shoes off - BTW Loews Chicago O’Hare hotel is a wonderful place to park and fly if you need to stay close to O’Hare)

The older we get, the less hassle we want to deal with. The Vanderbilt is in a great location, good dining options…. Yes it’s pricier, but then so is Tradewind. ;)

We always try to stay in San Juan for a couple of days before going to SBH. It’s a completely different experience than St Barts, walking around the old town, the history, the old forts, extremely friendly people, reasonable prices for great food and a wonderful atmosphere. If you are there on a Friday or Saturday, chances are you will see an elaborate wedding too! We stay at El Convento.

El Convento is such a beautiful place! My favorite in Old San Juan!

I agree, Tiffany! I actually stayed at El Convento in the late 70s, before it's renovation (it still much resembled an old Convent!). The problem that I've found in recent SJU overnights is that El Convento & Condado Vanderbilt -- both exquisite -- have required 2 or 3 night minimums. It's too bad when it happens because they're quite special places.

I just booked a one night stay at El Convento for next January en route to SBH.

I’m betting that you will find one overnight isn’t enough in Old San Juan! Be adventurous, walk around, check out the fort up the hill, stop in at Marylyn’s for the best Pina Colada you will ever have, if possible get a drink at the Cannon Club and check out the grotto(pics attached).
