Hotels in San Juan

My husband and I have taken everyone’s advice and are flying Tradewind in December! This is the first time we will be staying overnight in San Juan, PR however, and do not know what’s a good hotel to stay at overnight. We arrive at 11:30 PM and leave at 11 AM the next day, so we’re not looking for anything fancy - just clean and comfortable. Has anyone stayed at the airport hotel? Or any other recommendations that are close to the airport? Thanks in advance!

We have stayed at there more than a few years. Very basic, but clean and close to the gates. Why leave the airport property for less than 12 hours?

We have stayed numerous times at the airport hotel after late arrival
It is a short walk from baggage claim.
It is clean and simple and they have a nice breakfast in the morning
We always get the first flight over to St. Barts

About 5 years ago we were on the early flight from SJU to SBH on Tradewind, flew in afternoon before so needed place to overnight. Asked the Forum well in advance for info about the hotel at airport with similar responses to those posted so far on this thread. So full speed ahead, how bad could it be asked this admitted 'hotel snob." After finding the hotel itself due to poor signage & being greeted poorly by the 2 people behind the desk that was alot higher than I am in height...checking us in this duo spoke in Spanish, gave us the key so off we went to find out that the room was across from the elevators, the dining room for lunch/dinner, not breakfast, & as we soon discovered on the other side of the headboard of the bed was the public rest room where we could hear the 'business' being done & the flushing aftermath. So a call to the manager who too me around on other floors to select another 'brand new room' that was new with a 'king sized' bed...was not a king, only a queen. Clock not set to the correct time, bathroom shower had not quite been completed & the bed itself was not attached to the wall so if we moved, it moved. The dinner was an ok bar dinner that took forever to receive & there were very few others in either room. Breakfast...elsewhere, & negligible. Have never stayed in a hostel, but based on the other people we saw, they had. Needless to say, but I cannot recommend based on our horrible experience unless a FS or RZ manager has taken over this property.

It might be a bit primitive compared to a 4S, but the price and location is hard to beat.

If you stay at airport hotel they give you a Tradewind discount. Just show them your itinerary.
Hotel is quite comfortable and simple, all you need for quick turnaround.
And there is a nice gentleman making omelets in morning.

Sounds pretty enticing!

Depends what you are looking for: close, simple and clean stay at the airport hotel.
If you want to make the night in San Juan something special with a fancy dinner and an elegant room: stay someplace else !
My 2 cents having done both...

We always stay at the airport hotel when we have to overnight in San Juan. We only fly TW to St Barts thus out of curiosity and only if you wish to share, what is the TW discount? Before Irma we booked with the military discount (or AAA, whichever was less.) After Irma and in the past year, it has been interesting to go between on-line rates, especially Expedia. Because we usually arrive at midnight and depart on the first TW flight, the lowest rate wins. Perhaps the TW discount will be the way to go!

We have stayed at the Airport Hotel more times than I can count. Yes, you can get nit-picky as the above poster did. But if you are arriving to SJU after around 9m and have an early flight the next morning, all the nit-picking evaporates because you check in, fall into bed, get up in the morning and get to Paradise, 1-2-3. Easy peasy.

We're looking for a hotel at SJU for a quick overnight layover (arrive 9pm, depart on the 9:55am TW the next morning) next month. Airport hotel sounds like a good option, but is there a close second to consider? Also, what are the food options like for getting a bite to eat after a full day of traveling to get there from the west coast?

We recommend the airport hotel, for convenience, but have stayed multiple times at the Courtyard-Isla Verde. It’s about 8-10 minutes by taxi or Uber. Uber cost is less than $20 each way. I would check with them to confirm but it appears their beach side restaurant is open until 11. You may want to consider eating at one of the airport options.

The restaurant at the SJU airport is perfectly adequate for a dinner. Also included breakfast with room-rate, very friendly staff.

Adequate is the correct word.. if you are arriving at 9:00 only option is airport hotel for food.... nice bar with friendly people and an okay much needed burger after day of travel. Rooms are clean and there is breakfast offered in morning. There is a friendly chef making omelets.
And hotel has Tradewind discount

I just stayed at the airport hotel in January when our Tradewinds crew got to PR customs too late for us to be able to leave on the last flight to SBH before it got dark. It is basic and nothing special, but it was nice to just get up and go the next morning for the first plane to SBH...
