GnL, your honest comments on your personal experiences are always most welcome here. This site isn't Yelp or Tripadvisor. There are no ratings. I understand that some are reluctant to say anything negative here, but I'm OK with those that do. Their experience is their experience, and they should feel free to write about it. On the other hand, a gratuitous slam might not be as well received...

Thanks Kevin. I was worried I may have overstepped on a couple things. Best 10 days of the year for us. So looking forward. It's hard on forums like this to say anything negative. I know how it can hurt a business, we have a hair salon, so you can only imagine. No where is bad on the island, only some better than others. Thanks again for your work on the restos, I always print and bring with us. Now I can put a personal thought to it when I access it. Best, George and Lauren

Nicely done. Thank you for posting this (from "the guy who does the restaurant list", LOL, and you and everyone else who use it are most welcome.) You may be among the first to experience the new restaurant at the Carl Gustaf, Fouquet's. From what I've heard, the target date for the hotel reopening is sometime in February. QG, the new place by the Post Office, is doing very well. We ate there several times, with a 19:00 reservation. There were more families, fewer groups of locals, and we had no problem with the smoking. Later, I would expect more groups and possibly more smoking. I miss L'Escale (later Saladerie, and later still Harbour's Saladerie), and we liked the egg on the pizza too. Sometimes we would add "suplement oeuf" to our pizza order - an extra egg, so that we...

The St Martin protests are not a local version of the Pension Protests in Paris. These are about the French government denying people the right to rebuild in low-lying areas post-Irma, with an added factor of the ongoing problem with Bromates in the drinking water, which has been remediated on St Barth, but not St Martin.

The passage may have been on a very nice Azimut motor yacht that made the trip from English Harbor to Gustavia that day... a sailor by preference, I could adjust and would have a hard time leaving the boat for a villa... I'll leave it up to mrsm if she wants to share pics of what I think is the boat...

Cass, I am trying to figure how to attach pictures from way back when. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your family in New York. Merry Christmas, and I will try.

Hello all ! Usually this time of year I start going on the forum to see what is new on the island. A valuable resource of course. So I thought I would finally add my two cents from many years of visits. Maybe it can help a first visit for somebody. We always go late February for 10 days. Wish it was more often ! I know many people track how many years or times they have gone, we don't, but I figure it's been at least for 25 years. How to get there. This is just our experience from Philly, I am sure others have input also. PHL-SXM-SBH. We tried PHL-SJU once and used Tradewinds. Great professional carrier. Back then they didn't have as many flights, so if AA was late into SJU, well you can imagine. Oh did I mention TRIP INSURANCE. Used it twice. Now I know Winair has a VIP...

Travel between the airport and Voyager will be a problem unless the Gendarmes get the roads cleared. There are protests taking place on St Martin, with roadblocks, burning cars, tires and pallets, tear gas being fired, and rocks being thrown.

Agree, Kent . . . remarkable combination of factors that draw visitors back, over & over. To your list, I would add another component — security. I think that the sense of personal safety & security felt in being on SBH distinguishes it as a particularly desirable destination, where one can relax with a high degree of comfort. Maintaining this sense of predictable certainty is, in large part, the mission of the Collectivité . . . its managers know that tourism will wither if a crack opens in this important aspect of the island’s image.

We booked our villa through an agency this trip and forthe first time, had them handle dinner reservations. It worked perfectly. Laura at SB Properties took great car of us even when we wanted to change things on short notice. I will continue to do this in the future with which ever agency I use. As for Gumbs, I used this: gumbs.car.rental@wanadoo.fr and had easy back and forth to get my car reserved.

This is not a complaint. We are returning with another couple who has been with us a few years ago. In the mid 80's we first visited St.Barts. with 4 children and Denise's sister. Believe it or not we traveled together to the beaches in a Moke. In retrospect not wise, but that was a different time. We survived and we will be visiting again at the end of April. There is nothing that compares to a vacation on St. Barts. The people, the food, the beaches, the scenery around every turn. As many people from that time, I wish I had bought a property. I have lost track of the number of times we have been back, the one constant is that everyone we have traveled with has also returned.

Thanks for the replies. That seems consistent with how we have done it on past trips. I was just concerned that things had changed and reservations further in advance were required. Happy Holidays!

Please show us a picture of your boat! We used to sail down from New England, and the feeling of joy upon swishing into the harbor remains with me still. Enjoy your stay and the camaraderie of the port.
