Clearly the (1st) wave of the pandemic has been moving westbound across the world. Asia, Middle East, Europe, North America, Ö. And now Latin America. Once the peak of that wave has passed over a specific country (with a confirmed decrease of COVID-19 cases), authorities start to relax travel restrictions and re-open borders. We are currently seeing this happening in Europe (except for the UK where the virus came a little later). Greece, Italy, Spain, and France (all trying to save the summer season) will progressively reopen their borders in the coming weeks. By July, most travel restrictions in Europe will be gone. St Barth, being in the Americas region, geographically closer to the peak of the pandemic, is still exposed. The risk does not really come from its direct...

Someone is coughing. The original was posted before the lockdown. Everything is different now. Turnover is a natural progression every year. We will see what happens.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately many airlines are in critical situations right now, running out of cash and facing bankruptcy. Their strict cancellation policy might be explained by the fact that they simply don't have the cash to refund all customers. It really depends on how solid they are financially AND whether the airline in question has received state aid or not. Most large carriers have asked their government for state aid (including AA which asked for $12bn to the US government). I believe that WINAIR, a SXM-based airline, did not get support from the St Maarten government, which itself is completely broke. Amsterdam just provided local support to the country of St. Maarten. Regarding the "other" carrier between SXM and SBH, the French government is offering several...

Nice video, John! We just saw our first hummingbird at our feeder today...a late start this year for this area. My guess is that it’s been a very cool spring here, for the most part, which has kept them at bay. Glad to finally see them...they’re just beautiful!

Agreed. We have reservations for the week of Thanksgiving but if we can't come we'll have to cancel.

JimA, we are supposed to be going to Italy in September our nonstop flights have been cancelled. Hotels will be open. I just don’t think we can get there. We’ll only do nonstop as there is just too much uncertainty now and I don’t want us to get stuck in the middle of Europe. Glad you liked LTC. How is Grand Case doing since Irma? Kevin, I agree about cancellation policy being key. We use a realtor. I’ll email them today. I don’t want to lose the unit but I also don’t want to lose the 30% deposit. We should be in Anguilla right now. Bumped it to July and now bumping to May 2021. There’s no way they’ll be open in less than 2 months.

Living in a country ( Singapore) where quarantine is strictly enforced for any entrant on the territory, I can say that the main problem with SBH about quarantine is : where do people spend quarantine if they are tourists ? Where do you put people who are tested positive to the virus ? Who is caring for them ( food, laundry, ...) We have in Singapore big teams and facilities ( hotels, most of them being closed for a while) dedicated to that, generally paid by the government, sometimes not ( when the traveller decided to leave the country after March 27). I mean, I do not see how quarantine could be implemented in such a small island when it will reopen for tourists. Look at Spain which declared yesterday borders would reopen without any quarantine ( or tests) as soon as July, just on...

The cancellation policy is the key. If you're dealing with some sort of agent, TA, VRBO, etc. then check every level. Everything else will follow.

That's a tough call on whether or not to book. I don't know their cancellation policy nor how quickly the units fill up and haven't closely followed the scuttlebutt on when the island will "open" for tourism. I'm still hoping for Italy in October (pipe dream?) and St Barths in November. My thinking is that the biggest concerns about going to St Barths are: will they have me and will I want to get on a plane. By the way we stayed at the boutique hotel you recommended in Grand Case (les temps des cerises) and loved it

if the rest of your week is at Colony Club and you always stay in Gustavia, why not skip Sunset for something elsewhere on the island to change it up? I've never stayed there, but IIRC from reading about it here, the main attractions of Sunset are price and the fact that it is right in Gustavia. Since you are already in Gustavia for the rest of your trip maybe Le Village or something on a beach (Ilets de la plage)? You may find that you'd like to try something out of Gustavia in the future so you could look at it like a trial night.
