Well said. Even though I did not move around the world we relocated from Brooklyn to Detroit when I was 8, moved from private school to public school at 6th grade. Toughest and best experiences of my life.

I'm familiar with the manchineel tree, and they're not common but they do exist on SBH. It's certainly one to avoid! Those little crab apples aren't crab apples...

Well, we are their guests for this big event, but I think you are correct about inviting them to go to SBH afterwards! :D These might be the only friends I would go with without reserve, after the last ones I took! They would be very appreciative of SBH unlike the previous couple...but then again, I think I would be too selfish about my return to SBH to risk anything!

This is super fascinating, so thank you for posting this! The most important plant you really need to know about is the Manchineel...About 20 or so years ago, I had a run in with this delightful-smelling plant in Barbados..some Bajan ladies sitting under a tree about had a heart attack when I brought them an "apple" from the plant to see what this was, as it looked like a lime..they grabbed me, hardly speaking, and threw me into the nearest bathroom and washed my hands with the borax-type soap, and quite possibly saved my life. I will always be grateful to them and I have learned that my over-curiosity about plants and other things might have done me in. That is why I have learned to be wary of plants with which I am not familiar, especially in a foreign country, and have learned that...

I really must reply to this. My trips to SBH are simply sacred to me. We brought "friends" to SBH on one trip and they were so picky and unappreciative, we had an awful time and from then on, I have not and am not bringing anyone. Someone once said that other people can never appreciate the souvenirs you bring back from a trip as much as you, so don't bother bringing things back for others and expect them to appreciate what they mean to you. I can say the same for other people. Why not take the time to meet others on the island, or let the friends stay in their own villa and meet up as you wish. I have met so many wonderful people on SBH, especially those from our blog here, you will never be at a loss for people.

Speaking as an educator (2 Universities, Middle School, High School), I can truly say that children who spend time in other countries and meet children from different cultures, while finding their way in the new culture, is an invaluable experience to give to a child, as good an "education" as anything you can find in classroom. It makes children more worldly, independent, flexible, socially aware and confident...so many advantages, so many "teachable moments". That being said, it is good to do it when children are young, as they can learn another language more easily when they are under the age of 11 or 12. Speaking from my own experiences of moving after 3rd grade, 5th grade and 9th grade, it was not the greatest experience, and although I settled into my school, those are very hard...

Here's the 11PM NHC update. It looks like the forecast track of Jerry has shifted North a hair or two, and every bit helps. There appears to be a less than 10% chance of Tropical Storm Force winds on St Barth, but there will be winds. There will also be rain, hopefully more of the 1"-3" range, rather than the 4"-6" range 000 WTNT35 KNHC 200243 TCPAT5 BULLETIN Hurricane Jerry Advisory Number 11 NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL AL102019 1100 PM AST Thu Sep 19 2019

No hospital?? I had to go to the "no hospital" a few years ago, and received competent and thorough treatment. It's not the place for a triple bypass, but it's a quality hospital.

Météo France has now posted a "Vigilance Orange" for St Barth and St Martin due to Tropical Storm Jerry. . . . sorry to be a little disagreeable, but I have other thoughts on both points. There is a “hospital” . . . its capacity may be somewhat limited, but it has equipment & highly credible medical staff that are highly effective & state-of-art, as I learned several years ago when hospitalized there for a serious condition. Coordination of matters related to the situation occurred between physicians on SBH, in Paris, & with my personal doctors in FL. Not only that, the food was incredible! . . . and school: I believe it’s inaccurate to say that education ends at the 8th grade. My understanding is that the French system on SBH educates children through the age of 15 — perhaps 16. In addition, there is a private school on the island that offers education through high school years.

Many thanks to all for your happy wishes . . . very much appreciated! Wendy & I have been in New York, celebrating with a close friend, who shares the same birthday, & his wife. He has turned 80, so my 72 years are small potatoes in comparison! Meanwhile, I remain so very grateful for the SBH Online community of friends & the more frequent times I’m enjoying on SBH. Looking forward to the continuing friendship of each of you!

Wendy & I are so sorry, Toni, to read of your fall & pain . . . but gratified to know that the Medjet response was so positive. Your experience must have verged on being a nightmare. Thanks for sharing this narrative, & we’re, of course, relieved to know that you’re home & in good hands! Be well!

The spa at the Hotel Christopher looks like your best bet for a hotel spa, but they don't reopen until almost the end of your stay. www.hotelchristopher.com Here's what I have for a best guess at reopening dates for hotels: Le Barthelemy – Reopens October 28 Barriere Le Carl Gustav – December opening? Cheval Blanc IDF – Reopens in December Le Christopher – Reopens October 19 Eden Rock – Reopens November 20 Le Manapany – Reopens November 4 Pearl Beach – Open, Massage Cabin
