I could never understand why the Amex card is charged $ and the Visa euros but, I will make sure everything is paid with the Visa. I had such fights last year over the Amex card and the exchange rate. I have one of those electric racquets and will pack it just in case. Since my hot Italian blood attracts sucking insects, I always bring a prescription med called Periactin and a bug spray with as much DEET as I can find. I hope it is breezy in January. Staying in SXM is not that bad after reading your horror story and coming home is such a letdown that you don't need the extra angst.
