Peter,
My wife and I spent a month on Harbour Island one week in 1992. We were still "island shopping" at the time, and a friend told me that this was "the" place to go. Unfortunately , we were there the first week in October, very low season, and absolutely nothing was happening. Our meals were limited to our hotel and one other mediocre restaurant in the "city". Also, a tropical storm had just passed through, "belching-up" the entire contents of the ocean floor onto the beaches --we're talking attractive here! At the time, there was no heavy construction equipment on the island to aid in the clean up! There was still a noisy gas-fired generator that provided power for the island. There appeared to be a couple of small hotels that were about to open for high season ...20-30 rooms max. Little transportation on the island.

The neat parts: arrival on the island was by small boat from Eluthera. We met a young lady whose family had a home there and she shared with us that she attended the local school for one grading period in the 5th grade. She had been in a beauty pageant at the school and she was the only "white girl" in the contest. The locals were very nice, and it did not appear that there was a crime problem.
The size of the island ...seemed to be much smaller than SBH.

Lots of time for romance with the love of your life, reading (my wife read Kitty Kelly's "Nancy Reagan" and about 8 Art Griswald books), and ABSOLUTELY nothing else to do.
Remember, I wasn't there during high season. I'm sure that things would be "hopping" more then, but "It's not SBH!". I think that the attraction had to have been with the private villas. The hotel where we stayed didn't have a pool and the Jacuzzi had been drained for the tropical storm. They did have a happy hour (we've not been great fans of rum punch since), as this was the only social event that we found while there. GREAT! Back to romance and much reading! Okay, ask when I returned.

SteveT

I think things may have changed in the past 11 years on Harbour Island. St. Barths 11 years ago you couldn't buy fresh milk in a store.
