We are planning our second trip back to St. Barts this Summer and trying to decide on a villa. Anyone stayed at Villa Shell Beach near Shell Beach/Lurin lately? Comments on furnishings, access, and privacy?
Thanks!

We spent about a week at Villa Shell Beach in mid January. Loic Aomraoui was a very nice, friendly man and I have no doubt if there was even a small problem at the villa, he would arrive and fix it quickly.
The villa is very private, you don't see it from shell beach and there's only one neighbour, which I believe is the owner's cousin or something. One could occasionally hear his TV or radio but it's very quiet location considering it's still a walking distance from Gustavia. You can see the boats that are mooring front of Shell Beach.
Access is easy by car, a steep small road right after Carl Gustav hotel, a minute or two drive. It might be a bit troublesome after rain, though. You can walk to Gustavia if you don't mind going up and down the hill ;-) During the evening you may want to carry flash light to see where you're walking.
The furnishing has a sea theme, plenty of sea-related items around. Overall in good conditions but don't expect everything to be new and spotless. If you look at the pictures on the web, they're quite realistic. We didn't spend much time in the living room, if we were at the villa, we were at the pool or on the patio with the big table. They have french Canal digital and you can play CD/DVD's on the DVD player -- if you really want to.
We only used the bedroom on the main floor, which was quite fine. The bed is a bit too large for the room so there's not much space around it. Plenty of space for your clothes. There are two windows with shutters, no glass, so you need to be creative with the curtains to keep the mosquitoes out and get light in ;-)
The bathroom is quite big. The bathtub / shower is a bit funny, perhaps due the owners origins from Algeria. You don't really fit in the bath and you cannot shower under the shower, what you can do is that you can sit in the bathtub (there's a place for it) and shower there. Works ok, though.
The kitchen is well equipped although we didn't cook that much. The restaurants on the island are too good ;-)
Would I stay again at Villa Shell Beach? Most likely, but it wouldn't stop us from looking other villas as well. We come to the Caribbean for sun and light so the lighter and brighter the better, and this villa was a bit on the darker side - I'm not really sure why considering it had white ceiling and walls in the living room. The other issue was small creatures, cockroaches and the like. Back at home we don't have any of them, and nothing that's bigger than your fingernail. We saw a few creatures while there, mostly on the first day, and used our fair share of Raid. I guess the villa has plenty of hiding places for them and with plush vegetation around, there's little you can do about it. But this is really about what you're used to and we're not used to anything that is longer than 1 cm ;-)
Anyway, for the price Villa Shell Beach has plenty of room and space. The pool area is relatively large, separate jazucci downstairs, the patio with it's big table, big bathroom, etc. Your average villa for the same money is most likely smaller. The location is also excellent, not to mention the friendly owner.
We like to separate villas and hotels to "place to stay at" and "place to live at" categories. Villa Shell Beach, like most of other places where we've been around the world, is in the "place to stay at" category. We were sleeping there and having breakfast, but for most days we went to the beaches or elsewhere and dined out in the evenings. A place like La Baleine is in the "place to live at" category, when the villa is so nice that you really have to work hard to leave the villa and go to the beach. There you feel like you're at home. Unfortunately it's very difficult to find gems like this.

We're staying at Villa Shell Beach next month. How big are the bugs??? Does the villa get afternoon sun? Now I'm worried. I hate bugs. Were they thoughout the villa? We were in St. Croix in January and there are fuzzy black, catipillar bugs that were everywhere, inside and out. But we didn't see cockroaches, etc. However, I've seen some monster cockroaches throughout the Caribbean. Did you make coffee? What type of coffee maker? Any other tips or thoughts?
Thank you so much.

I'm not expert on bugs, nor do I know the names in english (or finnish for that matter ;-).. we saw a few cockroaches, between 5-10 cm in length. We also saw a few smaller ones that looked bit like cockroaches but they take small jumps, not sure what they are. We tried to make a bit more noise, sprayed the bedroom and bathroom, kept the lights on a bit more -- for most days we didn't see anything. I think in total over the week we saw less than a dozen so it's not that serious issue.
We didn't see any other "interesting bugs" nor caterpillar-type of bugs. We were in Nevis many years ago and it was so green island that we had to sleep with the lights on to keep the animals away. It was a very lovely island but also a zoo from this respect.
Couple of birds tried to make a nest to the patio lamps. Unfortunately the lamps didn't have any bottom so all the small branches and grass they brought fell to the floor. That was fun to watch ;-)
For afternoon sun Villa Shell Beach is perfect. The sunset view is better than from Shell Beach and you can enjoy the afternoon all the way to the sunset from the pool or jazucci area. Very good for that.
The coffee maker was a standard one, I don't drink normal coffee but my girlfriend used filter-grinded coffee from the Coffee Shop every morning. I preferred to take a trip to the Coffee Shop for espresso or latte but I'm spoiled with the machine we have at home ;-)

Thank you Petri. We have a great espresso machine here too that I'll really miss. I have a serious caffeine addiction! We have a winter storm warning with lots of snow and blizzard conditions so anywhere in St. Barths beats this!
Thanks again.

I hear that you actually have to TIE DOWN the coffee maker, or the roaches will drag it off.
Just kidding, I hate bugs too.

I strongly suggest you request that the owner have the house sprayed. Many villas have this done monthly.

It's the tropics! Bugs come and go, no matter how clean the house is. If they bother you then do as Gayle suggests and ask to have the house sprayed.

I think I could almost do drugs and still not be addicted ;-) I never got hooked into smoking when younger, and even if I normally drink a few espressos a day, I can easily live a month without any.

Sounds like fun, just take your car around for a spin! Driving on snow is great fun when you can let the car go into controlled slide and they you just "catch it" with loosing the acceleration. I hate when my girlfriend does it but I love to do it myself when I'm driving by myself ;-)
One day I'll take a track day to a snow track on a frozen lake where you can do it at much higher speed and there's just safe, soft snow around if you don't "make it" the first time..

I don't think your ice driving experience rivals anything we have here- thank God. I just want to get the hell off the road and into my garage. I hate other drivers in snow conditions.

You would have loved the site inspection I did yesterday, in the wet basement of an 80 year old manhattan brownstone.... The b@stards just sit there looking at you. Don't even move when the lite comes on. and BIG....in Fla, they'd be uh, palmetto bugs...LOL
