Nov 1 SXM to SBH new
      #72511 - 08/10/06 01:48 PM

We two are arriving on U.S. Air at 4:16pm and are interested in chartering something that will allow us to connect to SBH that day. Even if we could connect on the last Winair flight of the day at 4:45pm, it's already sold out. We don't want to take the boat(BTDT). Private message me if interested.

We arrive on the 2nd. What's the cost? We actually arrive at about 7:30a.m. the morning of the 2nd on a cruise and we are leaving the ship to spend 2 weeks on St. Bart's. What's the advantage of sharing a charter vs. just booking the regular flight at 110E each way?

Sorry, I'm a newbie.

If you are coming in to SXM by ship why not just take the ferry from Philipsburg to SBH? Why go all the way to the airport with all the hassle?

Great question, Andy! What is the time factor and the cost, please? I had heard that taking the ferry is quite boring because you cannot get outside the cabin, and there is not much to do...but it sounds like a great alternative.

the ferry is less then a quarter mile from the ship..the cost is somewhere around 100 euros round trip.....you can go outside if its calm out as there is a tiny area on top of the cabin....better that you grab a beer, sit in a chair, watch the really tacky Nikki Beach ads on the televsion, and the next thing you know you re there

EXCELLENT!!

Then that's what we'll do and it's literally half the cost of flying over...and can I have a Rum & Diet or Jack & Diet instead of that beer?

Jeffrey -

The Rapid Explorer ferry is still down for repairs. It may be back in service by November 2, and it may not. The other ferry, Voyager, is not as comfortable an option as Rapid Explorer, and leaves from Marigot. There are a number of Winair and Air Caraibes flights out of SXM to choose from, and several Air St Barth flights out of the Grand Case airport on the French Side.

What I heard was that they're waiting for parts and expected to be down for many weeks. They've been down for what, a month now?

They may be back online before Jeffrey's trip, but he needs to be aware of the current situation.

I'm used to the world of instant gratification, where a part can be overnighted, Amazon can get me a book, a DVD, or a 15-count package of paper towels tomorrow. I also live in the world of long leadtimes, where a replacement battery for one of my UPS systems has to be manufactured to order and has a 5-6 week leadtime, and a new generator set currently has a 50 week leadtime. I'm sure that if whatever broke was simple to fix or the part was readily available then the ferry would be back in service already.

or this was a perfect opportunity to stay down for repairs, a little longer then needed, during the lowest part of the season and at a time when the price of fuel is through the roof.....thus avoiding taking light and unprofitable loads over and back....and then miraculously get the part around....oh I dont know...maybe Thanksgiving weekend perhaps??

trust me... it wouldnt be the first time a boat company has done that...and I cant say I blame them if that is what they are doing

it took me 2 years to get engine and generator parts for the boat I was contracted to fix in St Croix.....but that was 26 years ago.....today you can get anything, anywhere....fast
