You Might Be A Barthian If (please add to list)
      #6614 - 08/06/03 05:49 AM

With apologies to Jeff Foxworthy, the comic who started the "you might be a redneck if" series of jokes, let us compile our own list. I define, for purpose of this list, a Barthian as any of us who wish that we were there anytime we are not.

1. If you ignore the Weather Channel when it forcasts tornadoes in your area but you closely track every tropical storm headed for the caribbean, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

2. If you pack up the car, ride down to your favorite American beach, walk out onto the beach, look around at all the crowds and want to leave, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

3. If you look in the refrigerator and have plenty of Heinekens and microbrew but rummage around and then close the door without getting anything since you could not find a Caribe, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

4. If you wake up one morning after a night of "slightly too much to drink", go into the bathroom, look in the mirror and sream out in terror "Honey! I've got tan lines" then, yes, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

5. If you have read enough of my posts to be either amused or annoyed, then, I hate to say it, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

6. If your best friend tells you he won a trip at work to go to Jamaica and you start crying and feeling sorry for him, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

7. If you are taking French lessons at home and have been out of college for twenty years, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

8. If you pay all your bills with a Frequent Flier Card and count your miles weekly, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

9. If running out of Ligne St Bart products is a catastrophe in your house, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

10 If you have a recurrent dream of being in a small, sputtering puddlehopper crowded with people bouncing around in turbulence as it heads seemingly straight toward a hill - and this is a HAPPY dream for you - then, most certainly, YOU MIGHT BE A BARTHIAN.

Please add to the list.

Do I recall that you are a teacher and have the entire summer off? Is this like homework for adults?

No. Not a teacher. I'm just a guy who loves SBH, has attention deficit disorder and cant focus at work or home on anything for very long, and I type fast.

As to homework for adults, this is an extra credit assignment that is voluntary. The real homework is planning the next trip to SBH.

Planning the next trip to SBH is done and that defintely is NOT homework. Trying to figure out what restaurants we will be going to is a pleasure and gets me salivating.

Yes, Andy. You get an "A" for today's assignment. If your next trip is already planned, you are on top of things.

A little hint- when you go in January and want to use frequent flier miles you book on the first day the airline will take your reservation because they only have 2 free seats available. That usually is 335 days from the reserve date.

Excellent tip Andy. Delta books 331 days out and will only book each piece on that day. I stayed up until midnight and booked the outbound on Delta with FF the first minute it was released. A week later I did the same thing to get the flight back. Great tip.

And, yes Erma, like me you have TWO trips planned and qualify for The Accelerated Class.

Okay, a Barthian (I guess), is this back home for me:

1~When you awake at sunrise to a light rain and don't know you are back.

2~When you get stopped by Traffic Control for following too closely or waving a car/scooter around you on a curve.

3~When you linger over dinner for 2-3 hours and annoy the waiter as you flag him by each time he says "could I get you anything else, like a check, maybe"

4~When you (if female) forget that a bikini means 2 pieces, not one, on the beach back home.

5~When the locals at home become offended by you opening champagne at 8AM on the beach.

6~When you stop and look for tin cans hanging on a post for cigarette butts at the entrance to a local beach.

7~When you turn on your laptop & the first thing you see is the forecast in Gustavia for the day.

8~When friends laugh at a guy wearing a pareo.

9~When you accidently speak French back home.

10~When everybody but you gets upset/impatient over nothing.

Ric

Funny, IV, but I particularly like #6. Reminds me of the other night at dinner where a friend was telling me about his favorite resort in his universe, Couples in Jamaica.....how great the nude beaches were and how terrific all the restaurants (4 or so) were . And how they didn't even leave the resort because it was so fabulous. I was thinking about how when my husband and I went to Jamaica (Sandal's)....about how when we did leave the resort we didn't much like what we found. And all the while I was listening and smiling and thinking about how much I pitied him. I tried to explain St. Barth to him but he didn't show much interest. Ok by me but sometimes you want to share with others about how wonderful the island is but you soon realize that some people just would never get being a Barthian.

That's why it's great we have this fantastic forum and you, IV, have certainly given me a lot of laughs (love your latest business plan). I though I was obsessed with St. Barth until I encountered you! And, like Mike R, I mean that in a very good way!

Cheri
