What are your thoughts on this for a holiday destination and more importantly as a place to live year round?
Merci,
M

we went during the summer and it was steamy and really hot. Lots of people DO live there though. A great restaurant in nearby (and Steamier)
is Elizabeth on 34th street in Downtown Savannah.

jackr, i agree elizabeth's is wonderful food. we snagged the cookbook on our last visit--and i think maybe it was 37th street?

i remember something in one of the foodie mags, bon apetit or food and wine that elizabeth and her formerly lawyerly husband (which is to say he's still the husband, but not actively lawyering) sold the place. would think the new owner would do all possible to capitalize on the repurtation, etc.

Marina,
Hilton Head is a great place if you are a golfer. Many great courses in the area. However, I agree with JackR, it is very hot and humid in the summer. So much so that when I was there in July some years ago, you could find no relief from the heat. The ocean and pools were like bathwater. You needed to take a cold shower to cool off! Most of the communities are very lovely and good food can be found, but the heat is what I remember the most!!

I was delivering a boat from Ft Myers, Fla. to Cape Cod and stopped into Hilton Head for fuel....and I found them to be pretty stuck up and full of themselves......like maybe too much starch in their jockeys or something.....we dont think we saw a wrinkle on one persons clothing there....but we had a great meal depsite that, and it looked like a pretty place...but you can have the humidity

Maybe it was 37th street. I was a while ago. but the food was fantastic. My wife the pastry chef picked up on the basis for her pie crust as lard instead of crisco. i was impressed with that even after the wine.
Many people around here have houses in HH and rent them out in the summertime.

Greetings from cold and rainy Amsterdam. Heat and humidity would be fine with me right about now! Ahh - Just bought a place in Hilton Head and moving from Amsterdam in the next few months and getting married in St B on Jan 24th. A bit freaked out to say the least. If any of you have any more suggestions, comments, etc re places to go in HH, Savannah, Charleston, surrounding areas, please let me know. My fiance and I are in our late 30's/early 40's. Had dinner one night and felt so out of place as everyone had a walker! Hoping that it's not geriatrics-ville (with all due respect) and that there are some nice places to go that dont offer early bird specials. All comments welcome, please!
Grazie,
Marina
PS I dont golf but guess I will have to learn, huh?

I'm also considering a visit to Hilton Head with a few guys in October or November of next year. We like golf, but also hiking, kayaking, and biking.

We liked that it was a place we could get to fairly easily from Ohio and Wisconsin and that it seemed like we could "do" it in a 5-day weekend. Also, it seemed like the weather is good there at that time.

Thoughts? Any better suggestions? I've never been there, so I'd appreciate any opinions.

Hilton Head is one of the gorgeous sea islands along the coast of South Carolina. It is overly developed but tastfully (unless you consider what happened to the "natives" along the way). It is divided up into "Plantations" which are large areas of Hotels, Villas, Condos, Timeshares, and private homes. They are all pretty nice. There are of course, many great golf courses and restaurants.
The beach is nice, flat with gentle surf, and great for walking (or riding a bike on).
The island is flat and there are bike trails and nature preserves and canals/waterways for canoeing/kayaking. (Lots of alligators, don't swim in the canals).
Sept Oct Nov is a great time to go just remember it is Hurricane season and if one is brewing you may have to leave or not get there.
It is also an easy drive into Savannah, Beaufort, and Charleston.
Read the Pat Conroy books that are set in the area and see the Movie, "The Great Santini" which was shot in Beaufort nearby.
I have been many times and used to live on another of the sea islands closer to Charleston. We love it there and would go back again.

Thanks John.

More specific follow-up - for 5 guys looking for a relaxing few days who like golf, but not necessarily more than hiking, bicycling, or kayaking, in October/November would you recommend one of these over any other:

Hilton Head
Kiawah Island
Jekyll Island (Georgia)
Amelia Island (Florida)

Hilton Head would be my choice. Kiawah is less developed and less to do there BUT you are 45 min from Charleston. Jekyll Island is a bit more isolated but similar to Kiawah (not may other options). Amelia Island is more of a "beach" resort, i.e. family place but near to Jacksonville.
You would need a rental car at any. All are relatively near an airport. Maybe Jacksonvilles is the largest/more flight options.
Still though, Hilton Head, especially for the Golf. Play the courses the pros play at Harbor Town, etc. And there are many courses. Also once you are there, i.e. on the island, distances are not great to go to restaurants, different courses.
If you are staying in a hotel, HH and Amelia Island have the best. If staying in Villa or Condo, all are good.
