TPunch: It is french law that all pools must now have alarms. This is a good thing. Even so, with really little ones, I would also like a physical barrier such as a big gate to the pool area.

nealm, IV's mention of HCH is a good tip.We stay at a 2BR at the other end of the same street(Rue de Colline) in Gustavia. The pool deck faces west and gets sun most of the day, therefore, the pool is a very comfortable temperature. I have it on good authority that HCH is very deluxe and beautifully furnished. It's easy to access, walk to the bakery, quiet, gorgeous sunsets.

Gayle has reviewed HCH before and gives it TOP marks as a favorite. Also, the folks at Wimco (ellie) rave over the place. It has the advantage of being in Gustavia which would make driving distances short to most places. It is a good option. Very high end, as is Kercliff (with its stunning Colombier location and view).
CLO is a favorite of many and has a nice pool - for those who like that sort of thing ;)
DAY is at the end of Pointe Milou and has a stunning view.
Ellie (Wimco) loves BOR and its location is also pretty central.

It looked like our pool at our villa (this past trip) had a metal cover and all you had to do was push a button to engage it. That would be a good arrangement with young children in tow. So, IV, you've only jumped into a pool roughly 5 times in SBH? Does that equal once a trip?! ;-))) You must be really warm blooded. Honestly, both Larry and I do get warm if we sunbathe by the pool and we both love dipping in the pool and we do it quite frequently. If there is no outdoor shower, it is also useful for removing the sand when you return from the beach so as not to have a villa floor full of sand.

I absolutely agree with this!! Glad to know it is now required by law. I have noticed more villas restricting ages of children which leads me to think they have not complied with this law. I think that it was just in effect on our last trip. We plan to bring twine to phsically tie the gate on our villa in addition to having the pool enclosed with an alarm. As many barriers as possible the better. Living in CA we hear stories every few monts or so of a small child drowning. Mostly at parties at others houses rather than in their own home. Be aware of your little ones at those get togethers around the pool also. Make sure 1 person is always on kid watch! and as many physical barriers as possible especially during naptime when your guard is down is key.

I believe that a phsical barrier circling the pool is acceptable, as long as it has a gate with a special anti-kid latch. The villas that I am familiar with have all chosen the pool alarm option.

HCH is indeed our favorite and we are already reserved for May 2007. BOR is also lovely, very high up in St. Jean, very private, but the master bedroom is quite far away and removed from the other two bedrooms so the grandparents might be the ones to be woken up by the kids in the a.m. or middle of the night, as the other two bedrooms are right next to each other. Both houses have lovely pools and both indoor and outdoor living spaces. HCH has a heated hot tub, BOR does not.

TPunch: Some villas restrict by age because of their physical layout. SIB CEO for instance is a great villa with areas you could walk off the deck were you not careful.
Cheri: We spend a lot of time on the beach. When we do lounge around the pooldeck, which is often, we might pop in once to cool off but then get right out. I said five, but let's work the numbers:
Isle de France: One trip in the pool. It was cold.
Francois Plantation: Layed out by the pool twice and even dangled toes in the water. Never jumped in.
Costa Nova: Jumped in with the wife once and she bolted right out so fast I am not sure she even got wet.
La Baleine: Smaller and therefore a little warmer than some other pools. We went in twice and actually stayed in for a while.
Dominque: Jumped in one afternoon after a few rhum drinks. Was cold and got out. Jumped in about 2 in the morning after Le Ti. But I dont know if we count that ;)
Kyody: Waded in about knee deep but never went all the way in.
So there it is. Six full immersions in various pools and several wadings.
As to outdoor showers, Costa Nova has a nice one right by the driveway and near the backdoor. So long as no one drives into the driveway, it is "private"

As to pools, remember my bias here. When we pull a Double Triple (hundred degree temperature and almost 100% humidity) pools get VERY warm. My friends with pools wont even dream of going in them if the water temp is below 81 degrees. We have had pool water so warm that we have actually gone to the ice house and brought blocks of ice to throw in the pool.
We dont do well in cold water down here.
