Miker, there are lessons to be learned here and they have been absorbed and studied by economists and sociologists. Both the developers catering to their market of wealthy individuals and your story about the finite resource of tilefish are examples of a phenomenon known as 'tragedy of the commons'. If an individual can achieve personal gain by exploiting and depleting a commonly shared resource (pastureland, air, oil, fish, roads, etc.) he will do so even if it means that, in the long run, everyone suffers. That's why societies have laws, taxes, and governments - to provide for the common good when it is in conflict with individual desires. Usually, it takes a disaster for a particular lesson to be learned and a law or policy to be put in place. National parks provide a preserve for wilderness. A fisherman's catch limit attempts to keep the population of fish stable. High prices of gas will eventually force us to figure out ways to do with less gasoline. Global warming has not yet forced us to limit pollution. All of these are examples of the 'tragedy of the commons' and varying responses to it. But I think the bottom line is contained in the population graph. Humans are growing exponentially on the planet and exploiting finite resources which are being depleted.

That might meet my criterion (8 inches) for making the 20 minute drive ;-)

Just checked Snowbird's web page - 8 " overnight and heavy snow today. The avalanche control explosions will be sounding this morning.
